Default XP Pro loses desktop and sound Settings

I have set up Customized settings for both my desktop and sound. I Shut down
the PC every night. Most of the time it remembers the settings and boot up
fine, but at least once a week when I boot up in the morning it will revert
to XP default settings. Is there something to prevent it from reverting
back, or some reason why it is doing this.
I have saved my settings for both desktop and sound so it is easy to set
them back to what I want. But I sure would like to know why its doing this.
TIA

Try this from MVP Kelly Theriot:
