Windows updates screwed my system

I have been running windows 7 on my laptop for a couple of years trouble
free.
I recently got a genuine copy of windows 8.1, and recently decided to
install it on the said laptop.

It went ok for a couple of days, until I installed important windows
updates. I downloaded and installed about 15 updates then windows wanted
to restart to complete the installation. Then the problems started; as
windows was trying to restart I got a blue screen saying a 'critical
process has died'

I have googled this but as there are many different reasons or different
updates causing the said problem, it was difficult to narrow it down to
something specific, apart from it may be hardware related.

Anyways, I then did another re install of win8 and this time I selected
each update individually to try and see which one was causing the problem.

I managed to install about 8 of the 15/17 updates and windows restarted
ok. Then I selected another update, and after windows said it wanted to
restart the rest of the updates were being installed. I only selected 1
update.

So after yet another reinstall, windows 8 was running ok, untill a
message said that there were important updates to install. I ignored the
said message, and after I finished my work I shut windows down, and
walked away. Then the next day upon switching on my laptop, I got the
exact same message as before.

I am now in the process of re installing windows 7 again.

If updates were installed one at a time, it might help if the last
update prior to the problem was identified. It might lead a clue to
'known or compatibility' issues.

Might also be appropriate to id the Windows version (8.0, 8.1, 8.1
Update 1) in use.

Yes and that is why I clone the drive or at least make a backup of the
OS before I do any updates.

On the last time I re installed Windows 8, I did make a backup of the
system, and stored it on my nas drive. So after the updates were
installed and the system restarted giving me the said error message, I
went through the menu, which was a bit obscure, to get me to do a system
image install, but as it was on my nas drive, windows 8 would not
recognise the system image I had created not more than 15 minutes before.

As I said in my initial post, I googled this problem, and it is quite a
common one, especially with laptops. Mine is a Acer Aspire 5338 and a
few years old now, and if the problem was hardware related, there's no
chance of me changing anything just for win8.

Windows 7 runs just fine, even after a load of updates.

In many cases, after a few years the hardware configuration of laptops will
make OS updates impractical. Except for Service packs and updates, I've
always stuck with the OS that was delivered with the laptop, and even my old
Win3.1 laptops still work.

Yes, that is why I prefer cloning vs. backing up. Although when backing
up I always need to test it and see if restore is reliable. Because if
you don't, it might not work. I have just cloned this machine here. This
machine stays current with critical updates, but it has accumulated 55
important updates. So I looked them all up and most of them fix certain
bugs that I haven't run into yet. So I was going to install at least
some of them.

This is true of some models, but not of others. My favorite uses Intel
945GM and a Core2 CPU. As most of them came with XP or Vista. They also
run Windows 7 and 8 well too. And Windows 7/8 included the drivers you
need right on the standard Windows install disc. I even found Motion
Computing LE1700 tablets also uses these chips and they run XP, Vista,
7, and 8 well too.

Windows 7 runs just fine, even after a load of updates.

Well Secunia has flagged Windows 8 as the most vulnerable Windows OS to
date. Thus for most of us, Windows 8 doesn't offer much to change from
our current OS.
