If you manage to clean it all off successfully, let us know. I have a PC
purchased with Win8.1 resident, and I'd just love to clear it all away
and put Win7 on it.

Ed

The easiest way to remove anything from a HD is to bootb up with a
windows 7 disc and just delete or format the partition(s)

I wish it were that easy. But Win8 winkles its way into the skirting
boards; and when you think you've managed to get rid of it, back it
springs like a genie from a bottle.

Look into UEFI.

I had a local service shop use their install disks. I have no idea
what they had to do to get there and it wasn't cheap.

Windows 8.x made me use Linux. I never looked back.
Unfortunately, I have to use Windows 8.x at work. It's crap.

https://www.linux.com/news/software/applications/768257-why-arguing-that-windows-is-better-than-linux-makes-you-look-silly/

Wow, what a silly article. The author didn't do himself any favors.

I have recently been tempted to try Linux again, but the article in
question is enough to dissuade me :-)

The first paragraph or two made me think I would disagree with you -
like he was heading for a bit of humor. But as I read further, I decided
either I didn't get his humor, or I finally saw what you meant.

I perhaps should have written a more detailed review of the article, or
better yet no review at all, but it seemed like such a fluff piece, like he
wasn't even trying. Maybe you're onto something, maybe it was humor, but
then I didn't get it any better than you did.

I just received this memo from the Department of Redundancy Department
(DoRD). It says, "For me, Linux isn't better than Windows, for me." I think
they're trying to tell me that we all have different requirements and
expectations, so YMMV. I'm sure Linux *is* really better for someone, but my
DoRD says I'm not a good candidate.

A friend of mine a number of years ago went to work for the DoRD. I
wrote a glowing recommendation for his application there, because he
usually answered the phone with "To whom do you wish to speak with?",
although for variety he also would say "With whom do you wish to speak
to?".

He had a great sense of humor, as you might guess. I lost touch with him
years ago when I moved far away from the area.

Great story. I like people like that. Regarding losing touch over great
distances, if only there existed some sort of electronic means of connecting
people from different areas, right? We should invent that.

Well what you do then is to go into the BIOS and disable secure boot,
then enable CSM and or Legacy devices, and then you can select a boot
option. You can't do that before the above as I have found out.

You should install Windows first then Linux as Windows usually screws up
the Linux install if Linux is installed first.

Some Linux distros are starting to support UEFI and of those some better
then others. So you may not have to enable the Legacy option. With those
distros that do support UEFI it wouldn't hurt to use Legacy boot. So you
will have to do some research before deciding what distro to use. Or
just use Legacy boot.

Windows 8.x, in comparison to absolutely every distribution of
GNU/Linux, is a joy to use, fast and stable. I suggest you give it
another try rather than sacrifice your sanity using the mediocre code in
GNU/Linux.

I am running Windows 8.1 and how I have it set up now is just as good as
any other previous OS if not better. I can boot straight to the desktop
and then just use it.

I have it set up in the exact same way and love the operating system. I
particularly like how my settings on the desktop are automatically
synched with those of my tablet ensuring that I get to preserve one
experience. Even though my laptop runs the excellent Windows 7 Ultimate,
I'd be very happy to upgrade to Windows 8 on it instead.

Here is another vote for Windows 8.1 booting directly to the desktop
being a great system.

I like the jumplist and the shadow icons on the toolbar

Otherwise it is just like an improved Windows XP

I don't like the fact that it is nearly impossible to close some Modern
Programs.

I would not if I could find a good Solitaire and Mahjong program. All
of the none modern progams comes with a ton of advertisements with the
program or the installer. While Mahjong does not have to phone home, I
shut down the LAN connection before using Solitaire.

I like how they improved the solitaire and mahjongg titles but have to
admit that I'm incredibly annoyed with the bombardment of advertisements
as well. I feel your pain.
