It's actually not bad at all, is it? Having endured Windows 8 and then
8.1 as long as I could on a new laptop and finally in desperation
wiping the drive and making a fresh install of Windows 7, I would be
happy to upgrade it to Windows 10 today on the basis of what I've seen
already in the preview version.

It may not be worth upgrading every Windows 7 machine, but I'd
certainly recommend that anybody lumbered with 8.0 or 8.1 should take
the free upgrade to 10 when it becomes available.

Microsoft still seem very keen that we should use their cloud service,
and most of the default apps are designed for this, but you don't have
to use them, and you can easily delete the tiles for them from the
start menu and customise it with your own choice. It's not even
necessary to create a Microsoft account, though not surprisingly they
don't make this obvious - you actually have to click a button to
accept the creation of an account, then on the *next* page there's an
option in small print at the bottom of the screen to continue
installing without one.

But the start menu behaves like the start menu we know and love even
if it looks a little different, we can still plant icons on the
taskbar in the usual way, all my existing applications run very
happily, and it can see and be seen on my local network of Windows 7
and Linux computers with no bother at all (apart from a bug for which
there is already a fix, and which I assume will be fixed properly in
the final version). I'm not tempted by fancy features like the talking
help assistant, which I think would very quickly annoy me even more
than that wretched talking paperclip, but I like the fact that
everything essential works as before, so I wouldn't have to re-learn
how to use a computer. Also, if I install or upgrade for anybody else,
I'm less likely to be plagued by panic calls asking me how to do basic
things that used to be easy but are now pointlessly different.

I understand the upgrade from 7 to 10 will only be free for the first
year, so I'm interested to know what form it will take. If it can only
be done online rather than from a disc, what would happen if I wanted
to replace the drive and reinstall after the year had elapsed?
Reinstalling upgraded software usually means reinstalling the original
followed by the upgrade, so I'd want it in some tangible form. However
they decide to do it, the future for Windows might not be so bleak
after all.

Any thoughts?

Rod.

I've just upgraded from 9901 to 9926 and it seems fine so far.
At first I thought the ability to create a system image had been
removed from Win10 but, as usual, Microsoft have just moved it.
It's now on the File History page of Control Panel, right down
on the left in tiny writing.

I can't say I like the newest Windows 10 build. That large search box
on the taskbar ugh! I notice when you remove items from the Start menu
the menu does not resize like before. I don't use the apps so I
removed them. Now the Start opens a large window with nothing in it.
It used to resize so that the window would be smaller when apps were
removed. I hope they don't have that stupid search bar in the final
release. I have Siri on my ipad and I never use it. I don't see
Cortana being any more usefull than Siri.

Possibilities (imo remote)
- upgrade from Win7/8x to 10 using Store provides media for
installation and reinstalling but only within one year of obtaining
media and only one that machine
or
- no media but key issued from Store and tied to machine and user
required to download and create media from a similar MSFT site (like the
two that provide ability to create media for Win7 and Win8 - the key
would be retained in user MSFT account

A more plausible scenario (but only my opinion thus not what may happen
and expands upon some of my earlier thoughts on Win10 life-of-device
support.

- Upgrade Win7/Win8x through the Windows Store (online web site for 7
and and via 'Store' app for 8x)
- Upgrading nullifies prior license (consistent approach where past
upgrades replace prior licensing)
- Win10 (since supported for life of device) is tied to that machine and
if upgraded via the Store (MSFT account) then info (including machine)
are stored in the cloud
- Win10 cloud stored data (may or may not be retrievable by user, i.e.
the cloud data could be similar to how Office 2013 manages it
**Temp Key provided to download program is not final key post
installation and key in registry is partial key, full licensed key
retained in MSFT account**

Need to reinstall ?
Two possible paths
- Via the Win10 Store app an option in user's MSFT account to reset
Win10 on ***same device*** in fact it may be necessary to use the same
device to access (i.e. The upgrade license would be valid to reset that
life-of-the-machine back to Win10) - don't know how MSFT would
manage/recognize device without some type of authorization comparison
or
- Install with Win7 or Win8x media, repeat the previous process in the
Store (online or app) - maybe even after one year (the year could be the
time of free upgrade not limiting reinstall on same device)

The gray area are for those without media (7/8x) and a need to replace
hardware in a life-of-device-unit that triggers or fails activation
which could be the silver bullet (life-of-device now ended) and a need
for retail Win10 full version media and valid installation product key.

I'm sure others can think of other scenarios as opposed to what they
want but won't get g.

You can remove the search box in the Taskbar right-click and uncheck the option.
Cortana is only available in the US version at the moment but I doubt I'll use it anyway.

In the taskbar and start menu settings panel, there's a "configure"
button that doesn't seem to do anything. Maybe it will in the final
version.

It's possible to set the tile size in the start menu, the default
value being called "medium", so you can make the whole thing smaller.
All I want next is the ability to add text labels to them, and then
dispense with the tiles altogether, a bit like what I can already do
with the menu icon in Linux Mint. We're getting there, gradually.

That seems to be the settling place for it all. A decent bit of
traffic.

alt.comp.os.windows-10 ?? Not on eternal-september, at least I didn't
find it.

It's there, too. You might have to refresh your group list, but E-S is
carrying it.

See Gene Bloch's comment, and let me add that it has nothing to do
with what newsreader you use. If you can't find it, it's because you
are doing something wrong.

You want to update (also called "refresh") your *newsgroup list*. Unless
Agent uses unusual terminology, "Update Directory" is not what you want.

The Agent people (Forte) also provide a news service, so if that's
what he's using, they would be the people to speak to.

Though having said that, the Forte news service actually does include
alt.comp.os.windows-10, so if anyone is using it and can't see that
group, it'll be for the same reason I couldn't. So many things update
themselves automatically these days that I'd simply forgotten that
newsgroup lists don't.
