I can "go just as fast" (whatever that means) on Windows 10 as I do with any other version. Faster, for some things. If you haven't been able to deal with its small leaning curve after all this time, I'd say it's your problem, not Windows'. I am talking about administering the thing.* I can find things faster with Classic Shell. The learning curve from 7 to Nein (w10) was enormous, not "small".* I had customer in tears.* I was in stitches laughing at some of the positioning of things. I have managed to find everything I need to find without Classic Shell, but it takes me a lot longer to get to them.* And each YUGE update of Nein has to change a bunch of stuff, like removing the Control Panel (I can still get at it, but what a pain in the ass to have to stop what I am doing and restore the functionality.) My Virtual Machine of Nein deliberately does not have Classic Shell installed as I want to see what my customer see on stock machines.* I want to feel their pain, so to speak. For instance, I find it a lot quicker to "winrnotepad" than to dig through the tiles down to the "W" and find in the Windows whatever menu. Don't get me started on removing the Control Panel. |

You can invoke "winrcontrol" at any time, and you can put it on the start menu or desktop or task bar if you like. I put it in the right-click "Open with..." menu. |

That last sentence should have been in the earlier paragraph, something like this: "I find it just as quick to "winrnotepad" on Windows 10 as I did in Windows 8, 7, Vista, and XP. I also put Notepad in the right- click "Open with..." menu." |

Perhaps you meant the 'r-click on the desktop' menu? Control Panel is an executable (and a weird one at that, look at it with a hex editor). On the command line, it also accepts a "Named Panel" as a parameter, allowing a particular control panel to be opened. This is how we had stuff like the following, offer a useful option in a past OS. control userpasswords2 It's actually like that in WinXP too. In WinXP, try Start : Eun : control.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\control.exe 8192 bytes There's no end to the bizarre stuff. You can do "control sysdm.cpl" or just run "sysdm.cpl" itself. Other types are .msc files, like eventvwr.msc. And we're expected to memorize these, for quick access (like from the Run box in Windows 7, because the right click menu is so lame). https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...ping-a-command Paul |

Once the computer installation is finished, you will be Suck Cessful with Windows 10. Enjoy using Windows 7 or Windows XP, (and being free from Windows 10). Until your unsupported software becomes riddled with viruses, then repeat the process. If you're the kind of person who finds himself picking up malware on a regular basis, a 'supported' OS isn't going to save you. You need to examine your Internet behaviors. I'm not. I attribute this to keeping the operating system and antivirus software up to date. Are you suggesting that the support offered by MS for 'supported' software has no effect at all on security? I'm suggesting it has limited effect. User behavior arguably has far greater effect. |

What I was getting at was that these are not my computers. Just how much time do I charge the customer for installing work arounds before I get on to solving their problems. All these work arounds are great for my system, but not necessarily for others who just want a problem fixed. And, if I introduce ANYTHING NEW. GOD HELP ME! They love Classic Shell as they are typically very use to W7 and if not, are not use to migrating around those obnoxious tiles. My own VM of 10 is bare bones so I can see what the customer sees. But, I do have to come clean and disclose that I did put services.msc and Power Off (a sweet utility) on the desktop. This is one of the reasons why I suffer with Windows Explorer (not IE). Because I can not be introducing things they don't understand just to help me out. If it is quick and they don't see it, I somethings will. |
