Default I Have Had it with Microsoft

My computer with Windows 8.1 is downloading Windows 10 right now. I
had updates set to download the updates but to let me choose which ones
to install.

So while it's downloading, I checked my update settings, and sure
enough, it was still set to only check for updates, not to install them.

I am removing Windows 8.1 from that computer, and I'm removing Windows
7 Professional from another computer, and I will only be using Linux
Mint from now on.

So why are you telling us this? Just go and do whatever turns you on.
this is a Windows newsgroup and most of us haven't used Linux or any
distros of it and so we won't be of any help to you here.

One thing you should know that Linux users are very lonely and unhappy
people and so they keep coming to Windows users (i.e. here) for
socializing!!

There seems to be a nonsequitur at play here. It's like
saying "my shoes aren't shiny, therefore I must
go to Starbucks and drink double-latte".

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non_sequitur_(logic)

There is an article that described how to
disengage GWX. And a single registry entry
should stop it. All you had to do was ask.

http://www.howtogeek.com/218856/how-...fication-tray/

And there's nothing wrong with Win7 or Win8 or Win8.1.
Just make sure to hide the CEIP related patches,
if that's your preference.

There is something wrong with Microsoft.

When I saw Windows 10 was downloading, I clicked on Stop Download, it
wouldn't stop. I shutdown the computer, and when I restarted it, the
download started again, and I couldn't stop it.

I'm just not going through the process of installing Windows 8.1 again,
and all the updates, it just isn't worth it.

I don't use my computers for work, I use them for entertainment,
shopping, and banking, and I can do that with Linux Mint, and not have
to deal with Windows looking for updates for twenty minutes, and then
taking forever to install them.

I appreciate all the help you have given me.

The GWX download uses BITS, a subsystem also used
by Windows Update. The BITS subsystem is not
designed to be stopped as such. But, you
can go into Services and disable BITS if you
want. That would be yet another potential way
to stick a fork in GWX.

You also have the option of renaming gwx.exe
or gwxui.exe and messing with those. That's how
I could tell they'd snuck into my Win7 setup
(after I specifically tried to prevent them).
I could see GWX running in Task Manager,
just before I rebooted. I delivered the
hammer to them.

There are *plenty* of leverage points.

If you use MediaCreationTool.exe to make
a Win10 DVD, I don't know anything of the
subsystems used for that. It could be
conventional download. It would make more
sense though, to use BITS, as it's a very
convenient thing for Microsoft (already
exists).

BITS stands for Background Intelligent Transfer Service.
More details here.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backgr...ansfer_Service

On a more modern version of Windows, you can declare
a network interface as "metered", meaning that
interface is expensive to operate. For example,
say you're on a farm and using Satellite Internet,
then you'd set the network as "metered". The Win10
upgrade, for example, should not be coming in on
a metered network interface. It would be more
appropriate for the background transfer to be
done on an uncapped network interface (like
the Starbucks parking lot Wifi in town).

And who's supposed to care?

Yer mama, apparently. As an obviously deformed and mentally ill
thalidomide baby from the '60s, she didn't abort you, now did she? But
that was probably mainly because of the welfare checks and food stamps she
would have missed out on to support her crack and heroin habits if she'd
just flushed you once and for all back then. Alas, hindsight, ehhh?

Some of the same people who care about anything else that appears in any
news group.

You cared enough to respond to the post, rather than simply reading it
and moving on. You could have just looked at the subject line and
ignored it.

While I still consider Linux to be absolute trash, I understand your
frustration and desire to check out the competition. You'll be back soon
enough though; Linux is just too awful for anyone to stick to it.

In November, it will be two years that I have been using Linux Mint
full time.

Have you ever seen me post here in the last two years using Windows?

I haven't paid attention to your posts at all. This might sound shocking
to you, but you're not that interesting.

Like I said, I still consider Linux to be trash but I'm happy that it's
working out so well for you.

Well I'm someone and I use Linux Mint alongside Windows 7 Professional.
Surely people are free to use whatever they wish without gratuitous
insults from people like you and Old Guy. At least you aren't appending a
