Default Everything is not everything it is cracked up to be

Is there something else that actually does what is needed quickly ?

A whole bunch of files on my PC.

I need to sort by date to see the latest.

Everything sort is dog slow !
Everything is not using a good sort algo !

While it is sorting it is locked up and will not even paint itself if
another app is moved over it.

There is no indication so a sort like other Windows apps e.g. an
hourglass cursor. No excuses please !.

It looks like the Scanning is a single thread. That is old technology.
A good app should span as many threads as there are drives to scan.
Believe you me that this would be another significant improvement.

In Windows File Explorer (and in the "Open File" lists in many
programs) simply click on a column heading to sort by that column.
Click again to reverse the sort order.

Not to make excuses or anything, but on my Win 7 PC Everything says I
have 582,155 files. Sorting on any column takes approximately a second,
maybe two. Is that about what you see?

Create a new User Profile and see if it works as you would expect from a
properly configured system. If it does then start using that new
profile and slowly, over time copy your personal files from old profile
to this new profile. Please note copy only the personal files. Don't
just copy and paste everything as this would paste even your corrupt
configuration files. You don't want this to happen.

If this doesn't resolve anything then clearly it is time to wipe the
disk clean and to start everything again by installing the latest OS
that is coming out next week (officially).

Good luck.

Just out of curiosity, I tried the same thing (I only have 553,308
file, but that's almost the same). I sorted on size. It took about 1
minute 7 seconds. I wonder why we are so different. It's the latest
version of Everything here.

That's a great question. I'm running Version 1.4.0.705b (x64). If I go
to Tools, Options, Indexes, the only things that are checked are "Index
file size" and "Index date modified". Are those both default settings? I
see options for "Fast size/date modified/path/ext sort", but none of
those options are checked.

I'm running 1.3.4.686 (x64). The only other option I see on their web
site is 1.4.1.809b, but that's a beta version. Where and when did you
get your version? Is it an earlier beta version?

The difference between our results is probably because of the
versions.

I have been running 1.4.1.809b for the past 5 weeks without any
problems - and it is fast! This beta was released on 2016-11-21 so I
thought it had a long enough gestation period and was worth trying.

While I was looking at past history, I see that version 1.4.0.705b was
released on 2015-10-11.

Did a test here.

Created a million files in one folder. These are short files,
that fit within slots in the $MFT.

Long story short, using the portable version of the one you
tried, I'm getting a sort done in 1 second.

The implication is:

1) Perhaps an installed version (which stores the indexes on disk
and uses the USN Journal to detect new files), is somehow slower.

2) AV software is interfering with behavior. While I could understand
such behavior during the initial Everything.exe scan, I cannot
imagine an AV needing to touch it when Everything is just consulting
its own database files.

If it sorts in a second, I don't see a need to multi-process
the thing. A table with a million files in it, sorted in a
second, that's pretty good. Didn't seem to matter which
column header I clicked, either.

The worst part of it, was the time taken for my file generator
program to create the million files, The program is designed to
create 8 million files, each file fits within a 1KB area in the
$MFT. Total disk space should be 8GB as a result. On Linux, using
a TMPFS disk, the program takes only 23 seconds to generate
8 million files. It was taking so long on my Windows RAMDisk,
I had to stop it, and be satisfied with 1 million files. It
seemed to be going slower with time (and potentially, it
was the updating of the USN Journal that was killing it,
not the actual file creation - there is "more bookkeeping
than file space" in this test).

Monty already answered for me, but I can confirm that the version I'm
using used to be a current beta, and I downloaded it from the author's
website at that time. It's no longer current, but it works well so I'm
in no hurry to update to the latest beta.

I agree. It would be interesting to see what happens if you upgrade to
1.4.x, but it's possible that you're put off by the beta tag, which I
could understand.

Exactly. I avoid all beta versions, even though they might be good.
I'll be patient and install it when it's actually released.

If I remember, I'll post back about 1.4 when I get it.
