Cortana talks to you, as a means of distraction from setting
all the privacy sliders to the "snoop off" position. There could
be an icon in the bottom left, to turn off the voice.

It's funny how the release version, always has features you
didn't see tested in the Insider Edition.

Thanks for the direct link - I have now updated two 64-bit PCs and am
downloading for a 32-bit update. The first two took about 1.5 hours
each from start to finish.

That's interesting... but I don't mind waiting.

Does the .iso fit on a single DVD?

The site is vague:
A blank USB flash drive with at least 5 GB of space or blank DVD (and
DVD burner) if you want to create media. We recommend using a blank USB
or blank DVD, because any content on it will be deleted.
When burning a DVD from an ISO file, if you are told the disc image file
is too large you will need to use Dual Layer (DL) DVD Media.

Well, it either will or won't fit. MS should know which!!!

I'd rather not waste the time to download it if it won't fit.

Thanks for that, downloaded at about 1/4 of my broadband speed,
installed up to about 70% than installation proceeded at a snail's pace
(no files being accessed in resource monitor, lots of update processes,
but apparently doing "nothing much", no cpu activity, no network
activity, after a couple of hours still only reached 90%, left it alone
overnight and it did finish)

Yes, of course all my security/privacy setting got mysteriously turned
back to "snoop" mode, and once again Edge stole the PDF association from
my chosen viewer.

Oh, and my bluetooth mouse claimed to be connected, but needed removing
and re-pairing before it would actually work.

Other than that, ok so far, why did they see fit to remove control panel
from the Win-X menu?

Using the Media Creation Tool on a Win10 Home system gave me an ISO of
3.38 GB in size. Standard DVD's are 4+ GB in size so a dual layer DVD
shouldn't be needed.

Of course you could always just download the ISO to your HDD and run
setup.exe directly from there. You'll be given the option of
downloading any additional updates before reaching the decision point of
choosing what to keep:

- Keep personal files and apps
- Keep personal files only
- Nothing

Choosing "Nothing" gives you a fresh Windows 10 install instead of an
updated one, but you'll still end up having a Windows.old folder with
the remnants of your current install inside of it.

A Win10 DVD can exceed 4GB but for practical reasons, they
will try not to exceed the size of a single-layer DVD.

For the first one, don't try to download that using an OS
sitting on a FAT32 partition (the file is just slightly
too big for the 4GB limit).

YMMV of course (these are probably US English...)

Since there is still stuff in there, they're idiots :-)

The plan is, obviously, to migrate everything in Control Panels,
to "slider land". They just don't seem to have the willpower
to finish the job. Think of the mess that's going to make
out of slider-land.

The word "control", executed in a Command Prompt window,
should open Control Panels. Once you've got it, you can try
pinning that to your Task Bar for future access. The word
"control" can also be typed into the Cortana search hole,
and works there too. The word "control" even works in a
WinXP Command Prompt.

The word "control" also takes arguments (at least in WinXP
it does), which is why we have

netplwiz (Modern Windows)
control userpasswords2 (WinXP)

*******

You'll be missing Command Prompt as well, for which Microsoft
thinks everyone will "love" Powershell. I don't particularly
find that very amusing. Powershell is fine when you *have*
to use it, but I'd prefer not to. A powershell session is
typically buried in intimidating multi-line red-colored
error messages, which is oh-so-friendly.

Type "cmd" into the Cortana search hole, then right-click
it to "Run as Administrator". That's how you can get an
Administrator command prompt. For a regular command prompt,
you can probably think of other recipes. Maybe starting
a flavor of Powershell, and running cmd from there would
work, but Powershell is more anal about syntax and
who knows what actually works. "cmd.exe" ? "C:\Windows\system32\cmd.exe" ?
And so on. I'm sure it will be amusing, whatever it is.

I don't think Powershell includes "." in the executable
path. You need to use something like ".\myhomebrewutility",
to execute code from the current working directory.

Maybe they're making all these changes, to leave a lasting
impression Windows 10 is a "work in progress". Kinda like
the city leaving open manhole covers on your street for
you to fall into.

Have fun ( for some values of "inconvenience" and "isn't
this just Win7 inconvenience all over again?" )

And bewa if it's like other Windows installation tools, it won't
recognise the existence of Sandisk USB flash drives. It ought to be modified
so it will write to any drive (HDD, flash) that can subsequently be used for
booting, rather than being restricted just to flash drives (only only some
makes of those).

I hit this problem when I was investigating how to reinstall Win 10 on a
dead PC. I encountered the "USB drive not found" error even when I could see
it in Windows Explorer, and researched the problem. It was an unbranded
drive (embedded in a novelty penguin !!!) but I wonder whether they'd used
Sandisk chipset. As it happened, I was able to resurrect the PC without
needing to reinstall - a crucial system file had disappeared so I put back a
copy from another PC.

I just installed "Creator" 1703 (15063.13) All went well, I downloaded
it to a 16GB USB 3 stick and installed from there, it installed in 31
minutes and I set all 5 security switches to Off, My control panel is
fine as I had a shortcut on the desktop. By the way my command and Admin
command prompts are still in the context menu and are working OK.
So Far OK but too soon to tell.

Settings - Taskbar

There's a toggle for "Replace Command Prompt with Windows PowerShell in
the menu when I right-click the start button or press Windows key+X"

Yes I knew the setting was coming, but I was expecting it to default to
powershell (from the insider rumours I'd heard) but it defaulted to
keeping command prompt, which saved me the bother.
