An article at MUO likes XYplorer which comes with a 30d free trial and
costs $40 for the lifetime license.

pay US$ 39.95 for a file manager...

I don't know all seven of these, but I know and use Directory Opus.
Highly recommended!

+1

It's a disgrace that windows file explorer languishes behind the
versatility of any of the third party offerings.

This is exactly the kind of situation I'm looking for, whether it's Free
Commander or another replacement.

So far, I've not found one.

I'm getting bleary-eyed from trying different file manager programs.

So far, none have met the desire to have it run instead of the MS
version when you go Startright clickExplore. That's a main wish at my
end, followed by the hierarchical structure lines. That includes
Directory Opus, which looks like a magnificent program.

"Commander" is a very popular word as part of a replacement program
name. But so far, no program named "Commander Commander"!

For my purposes, Explorer2 and Explorer++ seem to be the leading contenders.

Most are very similar, yet in some cases one or two may be superior for
a particular user's needs. I have a brother-in-law who would probably
find Q-Dir to be a boon for his current need to sort and organize files.

Still, for my wishes, File Manager from Windows for Workgroups still has
the best layout.

Most sites seem to have the same recommendations for replacements.
That's disappointing, since we go to the web for recommendations.

But, there's one site that seems to have just about everything listed. I
suspect the following two links ultimately give you the same results.

https://alternativeto.net/browse/search?q=file+manager

https://alternativeto.net/software/windows-explorer/

I've also checked some Windows/File Explorer extensions, but nothing
there so far.

Holy Cow, Mike!

Those are ideas that never would have occurred to me. Thanks very much
for the links.

I'll see if I can find updated info for 7, 8.1, and 10 before doing any
experiments.

I didn't see anyone mention it yet, but I assume you know that Windows
Explorer can display those lines that you're talking about. I like'em
too, so I have the lines enabled here.

Classic Shell can turn on the lines, but if you don't like Classic Shell
you can just determine which Registry entry does it* and create a reg
file to do the dirty work without installing Classic Shell.

*There are Registry snapshot/comparison tools for that purpose.

Use Classic Shell and watch what it does using Process
Explorer, as you make settings. The settings are likely
to be under something like
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Appearance
or HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop

NO!!! I did *NOT* know this!! I've been trying to find out how to do
it for years. Even asked in this newsgroup long, long ago. (But, not
in a galaxy far, far, away! LOL)

How did you enable the lines? Something along the lines of what
Mayayana suggested?

I have Classic Shell on my W7 system, but I do on 8.1 and 10. I will
check the multitude of settings there and look for it.

That comment could be applied to so many features and functions. A
couple weeks ago, I was helping a senior that had used a desktop for 5
years, didn't know how to save a file, or anything about file organization.

I'll have to check YouTube to see if there's any videos on using Process

I've never used process explorer.

Woops. Sorry. I meant Process Monitor. It started
out as Regmon and Filemon. (I still use those.) The
former recorded Registry actions in real time. The
latter did the same for the file system. ProcMon
puts it all together. ProcMon is slow and clunky compared
to the earlier versions. It requires a period of time just
to stop monitoring. But you can set filters to reduce
the data, which can get voluminous.

As an example,
just opening IE typically causes about 5,000 Registry
actions. It checks and writes the same values,
over and over and over. I don't know why. The only
explanation I can think of is that Microsoft is practicing
aobscurity through volume, trying to hide the numerous
poorly documented settings that IE checks. But most
software is far more well designed than that. Most program
just do a few, or maybe a few dozen, Registry actions
when they start. And since Procmon identifies the process
doing the actions, you can do something like monitor
only Classic Shell without too much trouble.

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sys...nloads/procmon
