Oh my... if you had read all of the text instead of just the headline,
it would have been clear to you that this ONLY refers to URL downloads
in Windows Installer 3.0. There is no change at all in user-level FTP.

Default SP2 from MSDN?

Plz read the thread again, and notice the topic was changed a bit later on.
You should read more carefully indeed.....

Have a nice day!

Guys, the question was about the MSDN SUBSCRIBER site. Not a random site.
You should read more carefully. Subject line, eh?

"Ronald" wrote in message

Nothing can be made complete monkey proof, can it?

When ppl start downloading stuff randomly from random site and install

it,
there is little that can help. Not even a official RTM of SP2. If will
make
any mistake they can in future (like disabling firewall -- some guy

told
me
it speeds up my Download speed, my ping time, my upload speed/// same

for
AV
programs.... etc etc).

Ppl that *want* to know if the realle have the official RTM should dl it
via
windows update only. But yeah, patience 1.0 hasn't RTM'ed

yet.............

It's like thinking a tiger i just a big friendly cat... ;-)

Have a nice day!

I d/l it, installed it. I thought it was supposed to be build 2180,

but
when I do a Winver I get the following:

Build 2600.xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158: Service Pack 2 which sounds

like
build
2158.

that shows it's the sp2 rtm (ppl in the wild don't care about build
numbers..)

People in the wild who don't care about build numbers will end up
downloading from some unknown site and getting 2179 or 2162 or earlier
just repackaged as XPSP2.exe or something stupid like that. Build
numbers are absolutely critical. Be sure you have 2180 and that you
get it from a MS-sanctioned DL site or order the CD from MS.

As for FTP, again, if Microsoft are choosing to discontinue their
own FTP command line app then this again is probably a good thing
for the majority of people who never use it (though I note that it
still seems to be installed and working on my machine here which is
running XP SP2 RTM).

I bet M$ and the software community at large would love to figure out
how to get rid of Usenet newsgroup support on the Internet in favor
of website forums?

If they do, then I for one will stop posting. So go find someone else to
lecture.

Getting rid of FTP might be a tiny first step in
that direction.

How so? I don't believe Usenet runs on FTP?

So how are you in a position to have such a detailed opinion about it? I
mean, aren't you kind of firing blind to talk about such things without any
first hand knowledge?

Incidentally, FTP *still* works here. Hasn't rotted away yet. And the only
documentation I can find for FTP being dropped relates to its use as a
software install point. Can you help me find the documentation that shows
that support for FTP is being dropped and FTP will never work again?

As I have stated elsewhere I have Beats tested SP2 for several months for
several of my clients. The major on which supplies custom software to major
companies throughout N.A. has decided to NOT support SP 2 and has advised
all its clients to stay with SP1 or to switch to Linux which will be fully
supported. I never make statements I cannot back up but don't think I need
to state my credentials with every OPINION I post.
I believe we are ALL still entitled to have our OWN opinions, correct?

Then your system most likely has a problem and will possibly have more
problems related to unsafe computing.
Most users need Service Pack 2 because most users are interested in
protecting their computer.

Also you contradict yourself:
"I do not have and never will have SP2 installed."
With that statement you are not qualified to make any judgments
against something you have not and will never use.

"I have Beats tested SP2 for several months for several of my
clients."
Unless you are saying testing is not using.

I do not NOW have....is that better?

I thought it should have been obvious from my comments that I DID have it at
one time, but reading comprehension seems to be at a minimum in these
newsgroups.

I personally did not have any "problems" with SP2 I just had to disable
most of its "features" it serves no useful function to me or my clients,
which by the way are approaching 4 MILLION machine hours virus, spyware and
hacker free!!!

Go back and actually read the article. The section is referring to
the Windows Installer NOT actual Windows. FTP is a MAJOR part of the
Internet and not even arrogant Microsoft would even dream of no longer
supporting it.

Testy,

Buddy, you do have something wrong. You misread the article you
posted and now you're bashing SP2 in general. Can I ask why you even
bothered with the ßeta? Anyway, I guess you're stuck with XP SP1 and
will never upgrade to Longhorn as you have to know it will be built on
the lessons learned with XP SP2.

People have sung the Linux song to extreme. Linux has just as many or
more faults as Windows has but since about 95% LESS people in the
world run Linux than Windows they haven't been beaten up by the
hackers as yet. At least since you'll be moving on to Linux we won't
have to hear your opinions next time around.

I believe we are ALL still entitled to have our OWN opinions, correct?

Not when you haven't bothered to read what you're basing your opinions
on. You MISread one article and have canned SP2 forever.

Supported and works are two very different things.

FTP does indeed work, but you have to tell the firewall to let it pass.

Funny MS own website states the FTP and GOPHER are no longer supported in
SP2.

You obviously have not read any of my reason and are basing YOUR opinions
on one little misreading by me. I am not overly fond of Linux it is my
clients who are moving this way, I just follow the money.
