Default SP2 what a bunch of @#$!!!

I had a PERFECTLY normal, secure, wonderful (hah!) running system before
I installed SP2 for Windows XP, which destroyed EVERYTHING!!!! I had
McAfee Security Service running, which apparently conflicted with
windows security, in spite of windows trying their best to make it as
generic as possible. Well, after UNINSTALLING mcafee and telling the
dumb, !@#$!@ windows Firewall to shutup and let port 10277 be accessible
from outside the network, it still did NOT allow 10277 (just a random
port -- it has no significance by the way) to be accessed from outside
the network. I then switched the firewall OFF and it STILL "silently"
firewalled my computer WITHOUT my concent!!!!!THEN! on top of ALL of
this, INTERNET EXPLORER started misbehaving. Every time I try browsing a
site, I have to refresh bloody ten times to get it to display the page.
Most of the times I get the "Page cannot be displayed - check your
connection" error and God knows what else. I'm tired of this.. I've
uninstalled it and I am PRAYING that my computer becomes USABLE again.
DO NOT INSTALL SP2 unless you know nothing about computers and all you
do on your desktop is check emails and use MICROSOFT'S MSN!!!

STEVE!

I know more than you about computers, and you need to calm down. You sound

How many non techies do? Not many. How many non techies are there who use XP
compared to techies? A million to one? MS should have provided step by step
instructions on ONE web site. They should have had a link to it on WU with
the recommendation that one print it. But what do they do? The recommend AU
and, surprise, surprise, non techies have problems.

On the bright side, it will give the techies lots of work.

MS could have done all that, and it would have been completely ignored.
Most of the people who are having issues are the kind of folks that don't
read the installation instructions, website precaution statements, etc.
They do not know how to, or are too lazy to keep their system running
properly. If they put as much energy into troubleshooting as they do in
blaming and flaming MS, they would have fixed their problems.

I wouldn't have ignored it and I think I am not alone. So far, to get the
true picture, you need to go to over 20 MS web sites and read countless
messages on these two newsgroups.

Most of the people who are having issues are the kind of folks that don't
read the installation instructions, website precaution statements, etc.

Of course, most people are not techies like I said. Most people want to --
of all things -- *use* their computer, not maintain, configure and
troubleshoot it. What "installation instructions"? Most people get one
instruction: enable AU.

They do not know how to,

Like I said, most people who own computers are not techies and, you're

Do you think that one has a computer so one can have the pleasure of
troubleshooting or do you think one has a computer to *use* it?

I find it odd that Steve is "Techie" enough to frequent MS NGs & even knows
how to cross-post, but apparently hasn't bothered reading any SP2 related
posts.

Until Sp2 the routine of Automatic Update has been the style...and those who
'use' their computer may have faithfully followed along -or not. In order to
have many computers using systems out there the emphasis went to 'make it
simple...and attractive' so Windows evolved and many computers sold.
I would venture that a large percentage of users now do not have a
background of using in DOS with the flashing cursor waiting for a command
and then discovering the start up menus that could be made. So now its click
an icon and its not much different than the current vehicles. Vehicles are
created that its practically necessary to go to a service for an oil change
since there is barely room to get under the car without a bunch of
paraphernalia to change the oil (that's from experience) Even service
centres require a computer set up in order to analyse or diagnose the
vehicle.
Thinking ahead and systematically solving a computer or vehicle problem is
not the populace way of operating, I think the condition that people 'are
not techies and don't know how' is likely true but its an 'industry created
condition'
I agree an instruction with detailed steps would have been a plus but how is
that possible with Automatic Update?
There is a good step by step instruction at
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/spackins.htm
I followed those instructions and downloaded the big file saved to disk and
the preparation and installation took the most part of a day. The
installation and follow-up has had no problems but I thought the security
panel set up was a bit unclear. It was not totally obvious about declaring
that a firewall and antivirus (unrecognized by name but noted by Sp2) would
be managed by myself.

SP2 has worked perfectly for me and for 10s of thousands of other users. I
gather you failed to read that your anti-virus should be OFF when you
install SP2. You act like your experience was based on how SP2 was written,
not on your sloppy installation method.

The only instruction from MS is activate AU. Nothing about AVs, programs
running in the background, etc. This is irresponsible. Period. Your
patronizing and denigrating attitude towards non-techies is not warranted.

It is generally accepted that a/v should be disabled when installing
programs, even though it it not always necessary so to do..

It is generally accepted by techies but not your average user and that's not
the only preparation that one needs to do. MS only advised to enable AU
which is irresponsible and the cause for many problems.

On the Windows Update page, there should be a link saying READ THIS BEFORE
INSTALLING SP 2! and automatic update should have never been created in the
first place.

I totally agree. SP2 ruined my computer and everything it does. Thank
God I was able to get system restore to work. I will keep my Zone
Alarm firewall and AVG ant-virus and forget about SP2. Too risky at
this point in time. I will wait until all of the bugs are fixed.
