If you had bothered to check the McAfee site, you would have found that they
are aware of this issue, and have posted instructions for fixing it. This
knowledge base article can be found at:
https://knowledgemap.nai.com/phpclient/viewKDoc.aspx?externalID=KB_KB37807&sessionID=Anon ymous|1189859261&sliceID=&docID=KC.KB_KB37807&url= kb/kb_kb37807.xml&dialogID=10017476&docType=DOC_Knowl edgeBase&iterationID=1&docName=Configuring%20the%2 0McAfee%20Common%20Management%20Agent%20to%20updat e%20on%20Microsoft%20Windows%20XPSP2

Expecting any company to automatically configure their software to work with
other software automatically is unrealistic, but it is generally a good idea
to check with the manufacturer of the software you are having the issue with
(in this case McAfee) for advise. If you had you would have found that the
fix takes about 2 minutes to implement and is much simpler than what you were
attempting.

I'm running two Sony P4's with XP Professional on each... I do a lot of
database development with Access and Excel interfaces... and the upgrade to
SP2 went off without a hitch... the two machines are networked together and I
upgraded both of them at the same time... I'm also running Trendmicro
Internet Security on my main machine with my internet connection...
Everything is working just fine after the upgrade...

The average techie would assume (probably wrongly) that you had
already virus scanned the install package.

SP2 has worked perfectly for me and for 10s of thousands of other users.

I doubt very seriously that you have contacted "10s of thousands of other
users".

I gather you failed to read that your anti-virus should be OFF when you
install SP2. You act like your experience was based on how SP2 was
written,
not on your sloppy installation method.

The only instruction from MS is activate AU. Nothing about AVs, programs
running in the background, etc. This is irresponsible. Period. Your
patronizing and denigrating attitude towards non-techies is not warranted.

Rubbish! If a user downloads an email with a virus then runs the
program with the virus, then he/she bypasses the firewall. If he then
connects to the Internet, his/her system will try to sned the virus to
others. A firewall that scans only incoming Internet connections only
does half the job.

That said, if you have a personal firewall AND good virus checking the
need for a two way firewall is reduced.

Cheers,

Cliff

I had an absolutely smooth install of SP2. I disabled my AV (Norton AV 2004)
and things went off just great. The only "problem" I had was Norton
complaining about its status being checked by other programs. A simple check
box took care of that though. Love SP2. Great job MS.

Simply running LiveUpdate will download and install the Norton patch that
will update VMI, and then Windows Security Center will recognize the status
of both Norton AV and Norton Firewall.

I have just finished reading many of the replies to this message, and I
must say: Wow! There are alot of "developers" out there having problems,
and flying off the handle without being completely informed. I call them
"developers" only because they are using Visual Studio (and that's the only
reason). Like so many others out there, I have a pretty heavily loaded
development environment (including AV running) and I installed SP2 without
incident. Everything has worked wonderfully ever since and I'm fairly
impressed with the update. I hope that the ones having such difficulty with
the product will identify where the problems lie, and be able to remedy them
quickly, but I feel that it's a bit premature to place the blame for all
these problems on Microsoft's shoulders.

I suspect your sample of one is at least as biased an estimator of the
true fraction of problems as the sampling obtained by reading this

If people are so worried about security, they shouldn't be using windows in
the first place... Even point and click too hard for you, consider buying a
type writer.

Well, I am sure there are others that experience problems with SP2. I agree
with others that Steve came down from the hill a little strong on the other
hand I did experience a weird problem in IE after installing SP2m not on all
machines but still.

Even if popup blocker is turned off, IE still seems to put its digital
fingers on it but allowing the new window to open but then the pages seems to
hang. When I press the stop button followed by the Go button the requested
page comes up just fine.

I haven't had a chance to research it further but if there are others that
know of this problem and have a solution, please let me know.

Thanks,

Wayne,

If you have a software problem, take a deep breath, a warm shower, a nice
cup-a-coffee then just solve it!

The popup blocker in SP2 is driving me crazy. Its a total pain when tring to
develop and run web apps in whideby. I can completely turn off popup blocking
and when running an website in whideby's new virtual iis it just blocks all
popups anyway. Does anyone have any ideas?? I think I am going to get rid of
SP2.
