Order the free CD he

No extra "crap" and it is essential that you have SP2 installed.

Google for "download windows xp sp2" and you'll be looking for "RTM"
(release to Microsoft groupies) and "266 MB". Some of these may be
faster than others. There are several out there, and you can also
request a copy of the CD, I think it's free, but it takes some time.

There's not a lot to tell about it - almost nobody's had problems (real
problems) with it - it's just mostly improvements on what's already
there. Networking, in particular, has vastly improved (hmm, improved?
perhaps "simplified" would be the better choice of words, especially for
home users like myself.)

During the install-dialogs you may have to crawl through the Windows
Firewall settings, and make some decisions on Microsoft's ideas regarding
"auto-updating" but 1) you always have a choice, and 2) you can always
change those choices via your control panel later.

Now, a little anecdote for your edification, and treats for the trolls if
they so desi

I downloaded and archived a copy of the 266 MB SP2 RTM file. This was
primarily becuase of the flap Sun Java caused with the MSVM between SP1
and SP1a. I'm one of those who preferred MSVM to Sun Java because it
seemed smaller, faster and more reliable to me, therefore I preferred the
SP1 over the SP1a, which nuked MSVM basically, in favor of Sun's
perceptions. Now, I have a cleaner which flushes out Sun Java's caches
of all the potential virus and trojans which regularly occur in my
surfing hard-core porn sites and the like. JK. Free fonts, and redirects
and all that kind of jive that's out there these days seem to drop little
tid-bits in some of the more hidden files... Whatever, the point is that
now it's resolved.

All that is moot now, except for the dogma it instilled in me to archive
a copy of original SP release - because I can *always* obtain a copy of
the latest version of the release.

That being said: one of the first things I noticed with regards to
installing SP2 was some minor, *very* *very* minor, inconsistancies and
incompatiblilties with my old installs of AVG free, v6 and ZoneAlarm Pro
(one of the older versions with which I had become quite fond.)

The new SP2 security sequence did NOT recognize AVG free v6, and some
glitch with recognizing updating the third-party firewall, but I simply
over-rode those dialogs by turning them off in the Control Panel
Windows Firewall & Security.

It came to pass that I updated ZoneAlarm Pro to v5.5.062.004 (the latest)
and also updated AVG Free from v6 to v7.

These went without incident, however, I was having some problems (so
minor I barely recall the specifics) with mostly seemingly slow boot-ups
- so I decided to flash my WinXP-SP2 OS again by executing the SP2 file
"over the top" so to speak.

Lo and behold, not only did that go silky smooth, but also after that
Windows XP recognized AVG free v7 and my firewall configuration - and my
boot-ups were much faster and smoother and everything seemed to fine tune
for me with that.

So, the moral of the story is: have fun; keep smiling; tithe regularly;
and brush your teeth at least 3 times a day!

Best regards.

Microsoft is the ONLY legitimate and trusted source for SP-2.
If Google turns up a source that does not come from Microsoft, there is no
assurance it is safe.

Hi

I suggest you use the full SP2 installer instead of Windows
Update to install SP2.

SP2 is available at the Microsoft Download Center
(standalone "network" version, 266 MB):

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...5-9e368d3cdb5a

(disregard the "intended for IT professionals and developers" part,
it can be used on a single computer as well)

If you do not have broadband at home, but you have at work or you have
friends that have it, you can download it there and burn it to a CD.

If you think that the download is to large, you can get the same file
on a CD from Microsoft (a lot of computer magazines currently also
have the CD included).

The Windows XP SP2 CD order point:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...s/default.mspx

For folders you can consider deleting and other disk cleanup tips
after a successful SP2 installation, take a look he
http://groups.google.com/groups?selm...GP15.phx. gbl

Before installing SP2, you should take a look at the
following sites:

What to Know Before You Download and Install Windows XP Service Pack 2
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/s...hattoknow.mspx

How to successfully install Windows XP Service Pack 2.
http://www.fixyourwindows.com/winxpsp2install.htm

Service Pack Installation Checklist
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/spackins.htm

Please take a look at this Microsoft knowledge base article as well:

Windows XP Service Pack 2 is not available to install from Windows
Update and is not offered by Automatic Updates
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=885627

*Important* part from the link above:

If you have T.V. Media from Total Velocity Corporation installed, or
your processor is a Intel P4 Prescott with C-0 stepping, you should
not install SP2.

Intel P4 Prescott processors came out February 2004, so if your
computer is older than that, this is not an issue for you. Also, if
you have a Dell, IBM or HP, this is not an issue.

If you suspect/know you have an Intel P4 Prescott processor, take a
look at the two following Web sites for what you need to do/have to
be able to install SP2 on the computer:

http://forum.aumha.org/viewtopic.php?t=7447
http://cquirke.mvps.org/sp2intel.htm

Newsflash:

Adware T.V. Media Program Removal Tool
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=886590

and

Microsoft have now released a fix for the problem where SP2 fails to
boot after installing it in a PC with the Prescott or a Celeron D CPU
(or fails to install in the case of slipstreamed cds). The problem is
described he

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=34535

and the download for the fix is available here (install it before you
install SP2):

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

Also, if you have a Dell Inspiron 1150 or 2650, you might get a
slow running system after installing SP2, take a look at this thread
for more on this:
http://groups.google.com/groups?thre...ws.prodigy.com

and here as well:

OMG! I sure didn't mean to leak any unofficial information, much less
dangerous, illegitimate or untrusted data - from the dreaded Google.

FYI: most of the first hits seem to actually link to a Microsoft server -
if right-clicking and copying the short-cut from within Windows XP is to be
trusted anymore. I started one file download, the first hit, just to make
sure it was not dead - but I didn't follow through because, like I
intimated, I already *gots* *mine* -- _whoo_ _whoo_!

There's also CRC data out there (MD5 and the like) - but again, I'm not
certain if that has a boner-Friday Microsoft origin... Might be a good
idea to be very selective which link you download from.

Thanks for the caution however - because of the number of folks who
reference this source, Microsoft.public newsgroups, I certainly agree that
one can't be *too* safe, especially in today's hostile environment.

(Waiting for my US Postal Dude to bring me my free CD might mean that I am
a very old kid with grandkids of mine own, and a whole 'nother OS is out
there by the time it gets here. Why, I think they actually used my blow-up
girlfriend before they delivered her here. The rats! (get it? rats minus
the pie) No telling what the bad guys could surreptitiously inject into a
Microsoft Windows XP SP2 CD sent without precautions via the US Mail, if
that was what was on their minds! Or what Microsoft might plant in your
rootkit directory, if that's what was on theirs, ehh?)

LOL! Total jesting.

I agree with your note of caution - but I also highly recommend archiving a
copy of that 266 MB file if you can do so.

Best regards.
