Default Network Sharing

I got a new computer for Xmas and am in the process of having it installed
by a technician. This will make three on a peer to peer network in my house.
Two are in the same room and the other is about 100 feet away in my study.

This may seem like a simple question for you gurus but I don't like the way
my computers share information now. What way does Microsoft recommend for
sharing data on a network like mine? The only thing I can tell you is that I
want each computer to be able to see and use the various data from all three
machines and I want each machine to store it's own data.

Thanks for any help on this.

Presumably all the systems are networked together via a router or hub of
some description.
All systems will sneed to share the folders and peripheral devices that
others need access to.
The data that is shared will still remain local to the system sharing it.
Depending on how m,uch user id's you have, it will be necessary to ensure
the relevant access permissions are granted on each system to allow access
to the data.
Not sure what you don't like about the current setup or indeed what the
current setup is like, so cannot help much with that.

Not sure what else you needed to know.

Presumably the tech. will configure it as per your wishes?

Hi Graham,

I have a BMC router and the two computers are sharing data now but only from
the E: Drive. Is that something simple to reconfigure where each computer
will store it's own data?

In essence not difficult at all. May depend on the application as it may
well have a path defined elsewhere which would need updating to work
correctly. e.g Outlook express, Sage accounts. I assume you intend to leave
the Windows o/s components where they are, else that could cause mayhem! :-)

Other data that you have created and saved should be fine.
I would suggest you COPY (not move) what data you have to the new location
and share it from there, BEFORE removing the original version just in
case!!!
Then try it out, check it works as it should.

Hi Graham,

I'm still having difficulty. Do you know of any computer technician that
could help me out? I have XP Pro and the technician could connect to my
computer using Remote Assistance to straighten out my problem. I could pay
based on an agreed hourly fee via PayPal.

Greetings nvslater,

The problem is on the machine you are attempting to connect to. It's not on
the machine you see the error message. On the computer you are connecting,
check the Event Viewer for an Event ID 2011. If so, you need to fix the
IRPStackSize that is indicated in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base
Article. Norton Antivirus can cause this to happen.

Antivirus Software May Cause Event ID 2011

have 3 macines all xp pro. Problem with two machines reading files on the

third. Get this error: \\Big\Photoshop CS is not accessable. You might not
have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of
this server to find out if you have permissions.
Not enough server storage is available to process this command.

another thought after tcp/ip version 6 was installed it caused a yellow flag (that will be my next project) in device manager when i uninstall it the flag goes away. Could that have caused my problem by leaving something there to block access.
