Default MS Optical Mouse Problem

Using MS Optical three button mouse (not wireless) on a Win XP Home
computer. Every now and then the mouse pointer "runs around the screen" out
of control or freezes momentarily (30secs or so). I have purchased a
replacement mouse (of the same type) and it does the same - therefore not a
hardware problem? What else could be the cause of these very annoying
problems?
TIA

Reinstall your video adapter drivers. If that does not fix
the problem, you may have a defective video card or it needs
to be reseated in the slot.
