Default BSOD - Stop Errors

Hi
I am running XP Pro.
Intermittently my PC hard drive clicks then produces a BSOD Stop Error.
The message indicates a memory dump??

My Computer is configured to display stop errors as below:
System Properties | Advanced | Startup and Recovery Settings | System
Failure.....
...... | Automatic Restart Box unchecked.

I switched the system off before taking note of the error.....[silly I know
]!!

Question 1
Does XP Pro keep a log history of stop errors, if so where do I locate them?

Question 2
Any other advice that may assist me locate the cause of the error would be
appreciated.

The clicking sound makes me think your hard drive is going. Test the hard
drive with a diagnostic utility downloaded from the drive mftr.'s website.
You will create a bootable CD with the file you download. You will need
third-party burning software to do this such as Roxio, Nero, or the free
CDBurnerXP Pro. Burn as an image, not as data.

Boot with the CD you made and do a thorough test of the drive. If it fails
any physical tests, replace it.

Thanks for the reply.

I downloaded Hitachi's Disk Fitness Test and the drive passed the Advanced
Test.

Being an intermittent problem....the pass doesn't reassure me.

I got the Stop error this time: 0x00000024....so I will check it out at your
link thanks.

0x00000024: NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM
(A problem occurred within NTFS.SYS, the driver file that allows the
system to read and write to NTFS file system drives. There may be a
physical problem with the disk, or an Interrupt Request Packet (IRP) may
be corrupted. Other common causes include heavy hard drive
fragmentation, heavy file I/O, problems with some types of
drive-mirroring software, or some antivirus software. I suggest running
ChkDsk or ScanDisk as a first step; then disable all file system filters
such as virus scanners, firewall software, or backup utilities. Check
the file properties of NTFS.SYS to ensure it matches the current OS or
SP version. Update all disk, tape backup, CD-ROM, or removable device
drivers to the most current versions.

Try HD Tune(freeware) as you can see the SMART
information relating to the drive etc.

Download and run it and see what it turns up.

Select the Info tabs and place the cursor on the drive under Drive
letter and then double click the two page icon ( copy to Clipboard )
and copy into a further message.

Select the Health tab and then double click the two page icon ( copy to
Clipboard ) and copy into a further message. Make sure you do a full
surface scan with HD Tune.

Open Disk Defragmenter and click on Analyse. Select View Report and
click on Save As and Save. Now find VolumeC.txt in your My Documents
Folder and post a copy. Do this before running Disk Defragmenter as it
is more informative.

I can see no obvious problems there.

What software changes did you make prior to the problem first arising.

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties,
Hardware,Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?

Try Start, Run, type "sigverif.exe" without quotes and hit OK. What
drivers are listed as unsigned? Disregard those which are not checked.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer.Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Try HD Tune(freeware) as you can see the SMART
information relating to the drive etc.

Download and run it and see what it turns up.

Select the Info tabs and place the cursor on the drive under Drive
letter and then double click the two page icon ( copy to Clipboard )
and copy into a further message.

Select the Health tab and then double click the two page icon (
copy to Clipboard ) and copy into a further message. Make sure you
do a full surface scan with HD Tune.

Open Disk Defragmenter and click on Analyse. Select View Report and
click on Save As and Save. Now find VolumeC.txt in your My Documents
Folder and post a copy. Do this before running Disk Defragmenter as
it is more informative.

The clicking sound makes me think your hard drive is going. Test
the hard drive with a diagnostic utility downloaded from the drive
mftr.'s website. You will create a bootable CD with the file you
download. You will need third-party burning software to do this
such as Roxio, Nero, or the free CDBurnerXP Pro. Burn as an image,
not as data.

Boot with the CD you made and do a thorough test of the drive. If
it fails any physical tests, replace it.

I ran sigverif.exe and it reports I have 184 unsigned files.
What file extensions determine drivers and how would you suggest I follow up
on this report?

How old is this computer? You would not normally get so many listed. Are
you disregarding those which are not checked.? It's not practical to
investigate so many when the other suggestion are far better lines of

Try HD Tune(freeware) as you can see the SMART
information relating to the drive etc.

Download and run it and see what it turns up.

Select the Info tabs and place the cursor on the drive under Drive
letter and then double click the two page icon ( copy to
Clipboard ) and copy into a further message.

Select the Health tab and then double click the two page icon (
copy to Clipboard ) and copy into a further message. Make sure you
do a full surface scan with HD Tune.

Open Disk Defragmenter and click on Analyse. Select View Report
and click on Save As and Save. Now find VolumeC.txt in your My
Documents Folder and post a copy. Do this before running Disk
Defragmenter as it is more informative.

Default BSOD - Stop Errors

Hi Gerry
The PC is about 7 years old ( the MB is a Jetway V266B)
I can live with the problem as it is intermittent....just annoying at
times....hence I thought I'd see if I could determine the cause.

I will understand if you can't help me any further regarding this
topic...but I would appreciate any other suggestions you may have. I have
reviewed some details below.

unsigned and 1152 files were not scanned for some reason?

On a newer system like mine I have 14 unsigned drivers so it is
reasonably practical to see if they are connected to the problem under
investigation. With 184 unsigned driver this becomes impractical.

What were the results of your looking at the reports in Event Viewer?

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer.Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.
