Default XP will not boot with DSL Modem Connected?

When I start my computer, with the DSL modem connected, it hangs continuously
and will not load Windows XP? It used to work O.K. but I recently subscribed
to my ISP's antivirus and firewall programs (Windws firewall is disabled) at
which time they upgraded (increased) my upload and download speeds.
Now the only way I can get my system to bootup is to disable my modem. Once
the system boots up then I can turn my modem back on and everything operates
O.K.
I have had my ISP provider out to examine their equipment and connection and
they say everything is O.K through their connection and the problem lies with
my computer. I am using Windows XP Professional with Microsoft Explorer both
of which are up to date.
In desparation, I am considering using a shut off switch for my modem which
would be cumbersome and my ISP provider wants me to leave my modem powered up
at all times.
Does anyone have any advice for overcoming this startup problem?
Thnaks, in advance, for any help provided.

How is your DSL modem connected to the PC?

Which technology does the modem connect to the PC ? Ethernet or
USB. If USB you may want to switch to a Ethernet connection to a
Wired Ethernet card/port on your PC. USB isn't the ideal way to get
a Broadband connection especially if you have higher speed.
It's unusual for a Ethernet connected Access device to cause any kind
of Boot delay, since it likely uses DHCP IP assignments.
It might help if you could re-post with the vendor/product name of the
Anti-Virus/Firewall software. Some are not good choices as they can
cause severe performance loss on the PC. Free isn't always best.

How does the DSL modem connect onto your PC?

You will need to try to access the PC via the "Safe Mode" and
uninstall the software module that is installed on your PC.

IMO: These security packages provided by ISP always require an
Internet access. I have experienced, in my area, a complete outage of
Internet services. That cause the security package to lock down the
PC and you could not access anything. NOTE: This is subject to the
ISP themselves.

These packages are "worthless."

there are a number of
reasons why it would
stall the pc.

------------

but best practice is to
be sure your modem is
off/disabled or disconnected
before windows starts up and
before you close your windows
session.

Check in your Event Viewer to see if there are any suspicious messages at
the time of your booting issues.
