Default IE 11 in Win 8.1 going nuts

After being open for a minute or two, I.E. starts opening new instances (new
windows) of itself at random. If left alone, it will open dozens.

I think it's crapware of some kind. Has anyone had experience with this and
discovered a specific cause?

Thanks!

When you exit IE11, look in Task Manager's Processes tab to make sure
ALL instances of iexplore.exe are gone. Some sites manage to load a
hidden instance of IE (app without a window) and then use a timer to
later open up more IE windows.

If you exit and there are no hidden instances of iexplore.exe still
loaded then make sure you enable the popup blocked in IE.

So what [decent] anti-virus/malware software did you use to scan your
computer for malware that might exhibit the behavior you mentioned?

I saw a similar thing while setting up a new computer. It turned out to
be malware of some kind that was pre-loaded on the system. It was
detected and eliminated during scans once I had some anti virus software
installed.

Thanks. I never did find the cause, but it did stop after several scan &
cleans.

Its a fault that has happened since version 6 it happens at random and you
have to force close internet explorer to stop it.

Doing only that will not eliminate the problem, which might explain why
you might see it again.

I can't promise anything, but if you run Process Monitor,
you can select a filter term such as "Operation is" "Process Start"
and log each process that is started.

If the operations in question were trying to launch a separate
process, each of the entries in Process Monitor would have the
command line parameters passed to the process.

As the trace is being collected, double-clicking an entry in there
will show what was used when the process was started.

For example, when I play a game here, I didn't know this, but
something tickles an NVidia program (loaded by rundll32) and
passes some sort of color adjustment command to it. And using
Process Monitor, I could see that in the log.

Process Monitor started to run out of RAM after a
couple hours, so there's a limit to how long you
can leave it running. Presumably some config option
in the program, can increase the max run time of the logging.

(Process Monitor)
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/...rnals/bb896645

I was playing with that, to see if I could prepare
for the next "zombie" process that shows up here. I
had something on the machine earlier today, which
was communicating (keepalive) with some node on the
Internet. TCPView from Sysinternals, showed there
was a process with no name doing it. And that process
did not show up in Task Manager or Process Explorer
(from Sysinternals). Really weird. A scan revealed
nothing of interest on C:. So I don't know what
the hell was going on. Still, it got me interested
in seeing if Process Monitor could keep track
of (previously launched) stuff. And it would need
more storage space, to leave it running all day.
