networking domain laptop to XP Pro Desktop Problems

I am having problems getting my laptop (on a domain, with cached
credentials) to be able to network with my XP Pro home desktop. I have
tried the following things from Chicago tech net web page:

1) I have logon laptop using the same id and password on both machines ( I
made the desktop id and password the same as what was on the laptop. If I
change any of the logon settings on the laptop, I lose the cached
credentials and have to send the laptop back to the office to get it fixed)
2) I have the workgroup name on the desktop the same name as the domain name
on the laptop. I am not sure what they mean by saying to install at home
first and then join the domain. I can only log into the domain on the
laptop. I don't connect to the domain because the office is in Boston and I
am in Denver.
3) Guest account is enabled on the laptop - I think!
4) Simple file sharing is enabled on both the laptop and the desktop
5) I have used the command net use \\Desktop /user:administrator. The
command says it was successful. It does not ask for a password, even though
there is a password (same as what is on the laptop). On the laptop, when I
go to my network places/ entire network - I see the workgroup (domain name).
If I open the workgroup it says the workgroup is not accessible. You might
not have permission to use this network resource.....The list of servers for
this workgroup is not currently available.

so, I enabled NetBios over TCP/IP- since I have a DHCP assigned IP address,
I used "Use NetBios setting from DHCP server". I also made sure that the
Computer Browser service was started.

I have also seen the message: System error 1385 has occurred - Logon
Failu the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this
computer.

To fix this I went to Administrative ToolsLocal Security SettingsLocal
PoliciesUser Rights Assignment, right-click on Access this computer from
the networkPropertiesAdd Users or Groups, everyone was in my list. It
still did not fix things.

Any ideas what else I should try? I have exhausted all of my options.
