Default "Active X component can't creat object" error on startup

I'm using Windows XP Home Edition on my Sony laptop, without problems until
recently.
At startup, and also when launching Explorer, I am now getting the following
Smartissue error message:
Active X component can't creat object error on startup. Src: Microsoft
VBScript runtime error Line:6 Error:0 Scode: 800aOlad

I searched for solutions and ended up stuck after downloading and running
Microsoft's MDAC Component Checker utility.
I then send an email to Sony and they direted me to the same place:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

The utility showed that I am running MDAC version 2.7 SP1 on Windows XP SP1
and it showed the version on my system has no mismatches (errors) in the Com
or Registry categories, but it does have 5 mismatches in the File details
category!
Sound like I found the problem..until i looked at the report more closely
and learned that the mismatches were only File VERSION mismatches... and in
all five cases it showed a mismatch only because i had a newer version of the
dll file on my system.

Now what??? I am too old for this kind of stuff anymore! And SONY support
seems to know less than I do, which is scary.
Thanks in advance.
