Default XP freezing and task manager

I have windows XP professional, and it seems that for the past few weeks, my
computer freezes randomly. I'm pertty sure that it is a virtual memory
problem, although I have increased virtual memory and it doesn't seem to
help. I have run spyware and virus scan, and it finds nothing apart from the
usual tracking cookies and such. When it freezes, I will Ctrl +Alt + Delete,
but instead of the normal task manager, I get the CPU usage window, with no
other tabs or menu. But I notice CPU usage is at 100% whenever it freezes. I
am only running one application at a time. Any help would be appreciated.

Default XP freezing and task manager

It seems so simple. I got task manager open, which was what I was missing.
There was an application running in the background that I could not see. It
was using nearly all of my memory. But the problem is fixed, it seems. Thank
you very much for your help.

In Task Manager double click on the top margin of the Window to restore
the tabs.

What Process Image is generating unexpected CPU usage?

How much RAM memory do you have? How large is the hard drive / partition
containing your pagefile.sys file and how much free space is on that drive /
partition?

Are you using any Norton utilities e.g. Norton Internet Security?

Please check Event Viewer for Warning / Error Reports in the System and
Application logs for the times when freezes occur and post copies.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, and
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default...308427&sd=tech

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should
double click for further information. You can copy using copy and paste.
Often the link will, however, say there is no further information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click
on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now
start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This
will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report complete with links
into the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event
Viewer.

Hope this helps.
