As for LiveCDs, you can use the concept for every-day work. Simply transfer them to a USB stick, and then give the thing a "persistent" file to store the file system. The portion holding the LiveCD part, is effectively read only. Only the bitmap file holding the file system, "remembers" anything. Deleting that file, erases all your changes. Leaving the bitmap file in place, gives a way of saving your progress from session to session. And that method of operation, is a bit more flexible, than an installation to a hard drive. In that I can carry the same USB key to different computers and use the key anywhere. That's why I have Linux Mint (Mate interface) on a USB key. That's better than burning optical media, and I get to carry any "forward progress" around with me. Like any packages I install, they're stored in the bitmap file. Max bitmap file size seems to be 4GB (as the USB stick uses FAT32). An 8GB USB key is a good place to start. Paul |

I'm not as crazy as I might seem... The thing about GNU/Linux is that it has a large number of excellent potential products. The problem is that instead of pooling their resources and focusing on the most important and/or promising projects, they divide their resources in such a way that instead of producing a dozen or so must-have applications, they produce a few hundred absolute trash ones. Could be. This stuff tends to be open source and crowd source, after all, and we don't have too many cat herders in that world :-) But the real problem for me is that the processes involved are not obvious, and the websites don't seem to provide adequate[1] clues about how to proceed. Which gets us back to cat herding, since the documentation is also open source etc... I did look online today (Google) long enough to see that I might be able to get it going if I am willing to work hard enough. But it seems that I'm not... Paul I might try the USB key route, but ATM I'm underconfident :-) Of the three CDs I made, one (XBMCbuntu[1]) wouldn't complete the installation process. The other two (Mythbuntu and LinHES) did not recognize my tuner card. Both are MythTV, IIRC (but I've gotten confused by now). The card is a Hauppauge WinTV-HVR2250; the company itself supports only Windows, AFAICT - and I did try. Around 20:00 local time last night, I said "Enough!" and put the original hard drive back into the box. Another argument for either the USB method you suggest, or for partitioning the drive (or a larger one) if I plan to experiment further. Today, looking a bit at some Google hits, I see that I can probably get my card recognized in only a few tens of hours of work :-) OK, probably not that much, but I'm losing interest fast. [1] I'm sure about which three distros I tried, but I might be confused about which one failed. And maybe all three are MythTV. -- Gene E. Bloch (Stumbling Bloch) |

Determining which email program to use, one that has full NG capability. NOT just a reader!! As you can see, I'm on a roll :-) I decided separate replies were more appropriate... Newsreaders are rather personal, so advice that is often given here is to try several and see what you like. I like separate programs, because I haven't much liked the newsreader part of combined programs, including TB, which I use for e-mail. For a separate newsreader, I seem to alternate between MesNews (this one) and 40Tude Dialog. This is not an hourly or daily alternation: after a year or two I get tired on one and revert to the other. I must say that I'm not sure why the resource use of TB is a problem. Does it really affect what your computer is doing? Hi I've been toying between three NGs but like to know if each have spell checker built in or do you need to have Word installed? The three a Opera Mail, Thunderbird and MesNews. I know Opera Mail & TB are both email & NG whereas MesNews is just for NGs. If I were to choose Opera Mail do I have to install the browser Opera as well. I did find searching but I don't know if I read it correctly that Opera Mail is also a stand alone download that I don't need to download the browser. Is that correct? When It was brought to my attention about MesNews, read whatever I could find, means I can keep OEClassic for my emails & be able to have my NGs again with MesNews. That shouldn't present a problem, any conflicts having both installed? "I think" if I understood this correctly on one of the sites that had a bit of information about it I have to download a certain file in order to have spell check. Is that correct? I would totally drown if I don't have spell check, I'm a terrible speller. My Main concern is right now are Opera Mail & MesNews. When you know nothing about either of them I get nervous & that makes it hard for me to decide. When you've been using a certain software (OE6) for so many years it's hard to let go & learn something new. And it's hard for me to learn something new being I'm a senior & the only one my age who has a computer. I learn what I can through these NGs, through kind & generous people like yourselves. As for TB my hubby swears by it has had it many years on all his laptops, never had a problem. While I was able to see how it look I wasn't able to, no not allowed, to fool around with it to see how it works. His computers are for his business, afraid I'll mess it up. I'm not to sure about using TB only for the fact it's a Mozilla product. I've used FF for a good many years never had any problems till last year with one of their updates. I could barely use my computer (XP) & I could not delete the software off my computer no how! I could only 'fix-it' and that did not work. Not wanting to have that happen again with my new computer I feel I should stay away from it. So again what are your thoughts on me downloading these two other software's & how easy would they be for me to learn & use? My reason for the NGs are, computer, genealogy, health & animals stuff. I don't need all the bells & whistles some have as it's too much to learn. You have help me a lot when you kindly explained how to find my download files & putting up with my many questions, I value your opinions & your suggestions. Thanks again!! Diane Hi I want to thank each of you for your help, taking the time to answer my questions and your suggestions. I hope I can ask you more & do apologize in doing so. Since I have OEClassic already on my computer and want to try say, Opera Mail, can both be on my computer without any conflicts? Providing I use only one of course. If I don't like Opera Mail or find it too difficult to use how easy is it to delete? Remember I couldn't delete Firefox. Same goes for MesNews. In either of these newsreaders can you make your own folders & sub folders? I did read but don't know if it's the same, Opera Mail has labels so I want to say that is probably the same. Am I correct? Also can the layout screen be changed cause all pictures I've seen so far shows three side by side columns. In your opinion since I've been a long time OE user, think Opera Mail would be too difficult for me to learn, too technical? Same goes for MesNews too. My concern with MesNews is if I had a problem & needed support their newsgroup is in foreign language, very little English. Is there some place else I can go for help other than the NGs? Yes I have been searching the internet trying to learn what I can about these mail programs but only finding reviews which is good but they leave out a lot of details which isn't helping me to make a final decision. Again appreciate your help! Diane --- This email is free from viruses and malware because avast! Antivirus protection is active. http://www.avast.com |

I can't imagine you would have trouble deleting Firefox or Opera Mail. It's just a matter of going into the Control Panel, clicking on Uninstall a Program in Programs, selecting the program you want to remove and then clicking Uninstall. In either of these newsreaders can you make your own folders & sub folders? I did read but don't know if it's the same, Opera Mail has labels so I want to say that is probably the same. At the end of the day, labels are indeed pretty much the same thing as folders. I don't know a thing about MesNews but find Opera Mail to be the easiest newsgroup reader to use. -- Silver Slimer GNU/Linux is Communism "You know you are giving communism a bad name by use that .signature!" - Pneuma |

You can use more than one, but there's a trick. You'll need that in any case if two e-mail programs are resident, in case you accidentally use the other reader. When you are experimenting with more than one e-mail reader, it is a good idea to set your programs to leave copies of your e-mail on the server(s). Otherwise when you read an e-mail in program 1, it is no longer available for program 2 - or vice versa. Yu can delete mail alter, manually. Once only one program is present, you can go to the normal setting of delete on server. This applies to POP e-mail, not to IMAP, at least the way IMAP is working for me. My IMAP mail remains on gmail and is always available to me on whatever device or program I use to read it. -- Gene E. Bloch (Stumbling Bloch) |
