Default Security Essentials update issue

I've been using the Security Essentials for virus detection and manually
running defintitions update once a day after the first boot-up. However,
this morning the update repeatedly failed with some error message. So I
figured maybe the program got corrupted and I better uninstall it and
then reinstall it again. However, after the uninstall I noticed some
popup from Windows Defender I never knew I had on my PC, so I tried to
run a defintition update on that, too. That also was unsuccessful with
an error status, saying:

"The program can't check for definition updates. Error found:
0x80072ee7. The server name or address could not be resolved.
Go online to view troubleshooting tips."

That the sends me to download and run MS' FixIt program.
So now I wonder what's going on. Are the MS servers down today or there
is some conflict between the Security Essentials and Defender that need
to be cleared up? I thought the Defender was only available for Win8.

If you remove MSE on Win7, Defender will be turned back on.

Reinstalling MSE will turn Defender off.

i.e. what you experienced was normal.

Reinstall MSE.

Thanks, I did. But I still get some kind of network connection error
when I try to update the definitions from within the MSE. Thankfully I
found directions how to update the definitions manually with the
mpam-fe.exe program and that turned the MSE icon from red to green
again. I hope there is some solution to this so I don't have to do
manual updates forever from now on.

Installing the def manually (after downloading) or updating from Windows
Update are usually the first recommended actions resolving an MSE update
failure.

Great, but the question still remains: how long do I have to do it
manually before I can do it again with MSE's own update function?
I just tried it an hour ago, and it was still not working.

Cameo,

Have you seen and tried following these instructions for resolving your MSE
update issues?

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/w...-update-issues

I've just noticed that the Windows Update service isn't running, so no
wonder MSE updates don't work either. So before I address MSE I need to
make Windows Update work.

I have a feeling that one of the several optional updates that I
installed recently also screwed up the Windows Update. But now even if
MS issues a patch for that, I could not install it without a functioning
Windows Update process.

I think I just go back to my old drive and make another image of it on
the Samsung SSD, Then I do a more careful and selective Windows Update
to it.

Thanks for the heads-up. No, I don't have that SW Update present and will
watch for it in the future, too. Since I don't have their PC, I probably
don't
have to worry about it too much.
