In Windows update there's an update that refuses to work
"Updates are available, 2018-01 cumulative update (KB4056892)"
Also: I'm alerted in the black section at the right of the screen that
a Java update is ready, but this does.nt work either.
(restarting the computer produces no results.)

It's normal once in a blue moon so wait until tomorrow and you will get
the notification, which you desperately need.

When you post back you'll need to confirm whether you have paid your
annual subscription to get support in these newsgroups. You have been
misusing our service so we have to clamp down on abusers like you.

Java has a control panel. You can
check the update setting there. "Turn it off,
save, turn it on again, save".

It could be, that an incoming Java Update uses the
Windows Installer service. What you should see, when
software uses a .msi file, is msiexec running in Task Manager.
And that might be related to Windows Installer service.
Just a guess.

Windows Update first of all, is like a plumbing nightmare.
If the pipes are plugged, then nothing works.

The first step, is in the Windows Update panel, checking the "history"
to see if failed updates are already listed. You can attempt to
install the one that's jammed for example. You can look up
the updates on catalog.update.microsoft.com.

https://www.catalog.update.microsoft...2%20cumulative

Windows has a Troubleshooter for Windows Update, in the control
panels. If you cannot find the control panels any more, you
can use a right-click of Start then Run, and enter "control"
or "control.exe" to bring up Control Panels. In there should
be a TroubleShooting panel. In the upper right hand corner,
enter Update and the search should return a "Windows Update"
entry. After that, you can reboot and see if it's fixed.

But my experience is though, that a lot of the time, just installing
the update manually by downloading from catalog.update.microsoft.com
is sufficient.

....ah! that must be it! We're having a RED MOON at the moment
http://www.australiantimes.com.au/20...-moon-tonight/
Often referred to as a BLOOD MOON which ia a harbinger of werewolves
and TROLLS.
So I'll wait for a BLUE MOON.

There is a SoftwareDistribution folder, and it's supposed
to clear that out and rebuild any database in there.

The script here can show you what services need to be
turned off, so you can clear out SoftwareDistribution. I thought
the Windows Update Troubleshooter is basically doing the same
thing when it corrects the database.

Losing the display info in Windows History is not the end of the
world. The computer still knows which updates have been installed
and which ones have not.

Cleaning out SoftwareDistribution can be used, if
your other attempts are not resolving the issue.

I find that downloading the failed ones from catalog.update.microsoft.com
was enough for me. They almost always install manually.

I cleaned out that folder though, when one day Windows Update was
just spinning the circle thing for hours on end. And the cleanup
of that folder, fixed whatever was wrong at the time.

I have a few restorers, but none restore all icons to exactly the same
positions.

I'm thinking of pinning them all on to the taskbar, and clearing the
desktop.

I have previously suggested to you that DesktopOK will allow you to
quickly restore them to their usual locations.

I have a few restorers, but none restore all icons to exactly the same
positions.

DesktopOK has always restored desktop icons to exactly the same
positions that I put them. I sometimes try out different programs and
may delete any I do not wisk to keep. Any changes that I make to the
desktop icons, then I immediately click the DesktopOK icon and when
the program opens the user interface I then click the "Save" button.

The program doesn't detect that I have made any changes. Clicking the
"Save" button just updates the position of all icons in the INI file.

And they always restore all icons to the last saved position.
