Default "Windows could not configure some components"

Having wrestled my desktop into submission - it's running
the latest Windows now - I am trying to update my somewhat
more modern laptop and that's failing too. It reaches 87%
complete and then reports failure in a popup that says it
couldn't configure some components (thanks for telling me
which ones!) and then tells me to reboot the machine and
"restart the update". Restart? The machine reboots and
then undoes everything, restoring the system to the state
before the update. Should the update process somehow
restart instead of simply unwinding everything?

Sure to follow will be many suggestions by others that have wrestled with
this problem.

A couple of things to try:

1. Exit out of any 3rd party antivirus/malware software like MalwareBytes,
Avast, Norton - whatever. Just turn them off for the update period. Having
MS Defender on is ok.

2. Go here https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10
and select the Download tool now which is the Media Creator Tool and then
follow instructions and you should update to version 1709. Then there will
be a host of updates to install after that update has installed - after
rebooting.

3. Now if you want to know what is causing the stop at 87% just Google "why
does win10 update stop at 87%" and you'll have lot's of reading

I don't know what size storage you have on your computer or how much
free space, but from experience you need at least 16 GB free.

Go to Settings; Updates and Security; and click Trouble shooting. Run
the Windows Update program.

Delete the deletable files in \Windows\softwaredistribution. When I was
having update problems I have had to delete literally thousands of files
from this directory. Each update adds files, fails, retrys, and add
more files until things become broken.

Rerun the Windows Update troubleshooter.

I have found this fixes most of the update problems if you have at least
16 GB of free storage space.

I have a tablet with 32GB of storage and have loaded every thing
possible to drive D: and fight to maintain the 16GB free.

#2. If the op is following that route and the device was 1703 and the
87% failure was on installing 1709, then using the MCT created media to
update to 1709...the 'host of updates' should be 3 or 4 minimum - latest
Servicing Stack Update, the latest Cumulative Update, Flash, and if not
already current, the MSRT. In most cases the max should be 6(two SSUs,
two cumulative updates to bring up to x.334, Flash and MSRT) assuming no
hardware updates are necessary.
