Default Volume Control problem

I have installed a Terratec sound device and have configured it to play all
sounds including midi..

I can play mp3s and CDs OK but the Volume Control Options has the Advanced
Controls greyed out and doesn't bring up the list of checkboxes so that I
can tick MIDI.

The only options it allows are Wave, SW Synth and CD Player.

Any help gratefully appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Stuart Reed
