Default Desk top after reloading XP and updates goes from set up menu to d

My desk top has been used for games, skype, pictures by family friends and
visitors. It had so much crap on it and it became so slow. I decided to clean
it up and reload XP home. Everything went fine until 58 updates automatically
downloaded from MS. Now it has gone into some kind of loop. Start up to
option menu for type of start. Automatically goes to blue screen and starts
dumping memory up to 100 then cycles again and again. If I press F8 or F5 the
set up menu comes up. I cannot boot from disk, I cannot getto dos command - I
am really stuck here guys, please help.
I have backed up the date that I need so I am quite happy to format the hard
drive - if possible. please email me on
