I had an accounting firm have me go around an turn off all
their Windows updates during (income) tax season as they
could not risk the downtime.

Didn't seem to sink in for some reason... the hard drive is a 15k rpm type.

Hi Grey Cloud,

By the way, the point about running a USB3 stick in a USB2 port
with FC22 direct install was that even at the reduced performance
of USB2, FC22 still gives native Windows a run for it money.
Actually it feels like the "drag" has been removed. Windows
is bloated; Linux is stripped. It shows.

Then again, it might just be an emotional reaction, as my
direct install stick is cherried out the way I want it for
troubleshooting.

Also, I have found that the cheap USB2 sticks are quite a bit
slower than USB2 spec. So, sometimes I will deliberately
get a USB3 stick for a USB2 application as they tend to be
full speed on USB2, although not always full speed on USB3.
Kingston's G2 Data Travels comes to mind.

I obviously don't use a cheap USB2 sticks for my FC22
Direct Install stick.

I've never had a Windows Update problem either, and I think you said about
the same to me. ;-)

My HP laptop from 2000, HP laptop from 2002, HP laptop from 2010, Dell
laptop from 2012 and second Dell laptop from 2012 all came with the type of
power supply that you're describing. I assumed it was quite common and
normal.

If you pick up the laptop and walk around with it, you don't necessarily
want to be carrying around an internal power supply. In fact, I don't
remember seeing a laptop with an internal power supply at all.

Probably this is its best area of usage:

I've yet to have any windows problems at all. Maybe you should just get
a decent HP tower.

Hi GreyCloud,

My experience with HP is rather bad. Compaq and HP use
to compete with each other as to wish could make the
worst computers. Now it is a moot point. But then
again, yours may have cost more than the $400.00 my
customer's paid for theirs, which may be the problem
all around.

Seems now-a-days the only quality stuff has to be custom
made. Lenovo "seems" (watch the "weasel" word) to do
okay for a production computer. Dell, "maybe". The one
and only Dell W7 desktop at Costco seems to do alright
But is is more like 900.00 U$D, not $400.00.

Bear in mind that I only get called when there is
a problem that the customer has given up on trying to
fix himself. I get called on some really weird stuff.
Today's trouble call is on a Power PC that won't keep
its editor's configuration settings. If you are I.T.
for a particular group of people, you will only see
their specific problems, not the wide open mess I see.

Have you noticed that some of those cheap-assed HP's now
come without an internal power supply? I just had to shake
my head at a power cable with an inline power block
plugged into the back of the computer, like a printer's
power block. Oh my goodness!

As I have mentioned before, I own an HP tower. It has a 430 Watt power
supply with a regular power cord. The ram is ECC and the cpu is an i7.
I don't buy into cheap hardware, since it seems that the cheap stuff is
designed poorly in most cases due to engineering shortcuts.

On the high server end, HP manufactures disaster tolerant machines.
Not for the casual user, but more for mission critical houses.

Consumer PCs are built with the cheapest parts available at the moment
of ordering and tested long enough to get rid of the really bad ones
(i.e., a four-hour burn-in). My last job was supporting a manufacturing
line building PCs for HP, Dell. Compaq, NEC, Ambra (didn't last) and
others.

To get a reliable system, go with workstation-class hardware. They're
made with better components and are better supported. Yes, they cost
more, but you'll have less trouble with them.

True.

Actually, I was talking about HP's cheap Desktops

Hi Char,

Do yo still have the link of the history of bad updates I
send you? I forgot to book mark it and I can't find it
through the thousands of hits on the subject.
