No special software is required. You can get rid of the arrows with a
registry edit. See
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windo...windows-vista/
and ignore the word "Vista" in the URL.

However, my recommendation is that you do *not* do this. The arrows
serve an important function--providing quick visual identification of
a shortcut. If you remove the arrows, you run the substantial risk
that sooner or later you will delete something you wanted to keep,
thinking that you were just deleting a shortcut to it. I would leave
the arrows as they are.

Search for WindowsShortcutArrowEditor . Although the description
does not mention Windows 10, it works just fine.

For many years one could:
enter regedit
find lnkfile
delete isshortcut

same with piffile

and your little arrows will go.

Actually if you want to test it, I suggest you just amend the items. I add a
~ as in Isshortcut~

You can do the same with Win-10 but the built-in banana skin will remove
your ability to get anything to show up when you right-click the start
button.

Yup. The best Windows ever.

+1

I *do* prefer to distinguish between 'shortcuts' and actual files/
folders since I often create desktop shortcuts to stuff I want easy
access to on a semi-permanent basis without having to locate gigabyte
sized media files on the system volume.

Accidentally deleting a shortcut is no more than a minor nuisance
whereas deleting actual files and folders can range from being a major to
a total and utter disaster.

I've seen 'arrowless' shortcut icons on some of my customers' desktops
and wondered at the mentality of the person responsible for providing
such a facility in the first place, let alone the mentality of my
customer for thinking such a 'feature' had any merit whatsoever.
