Default Did a download of old Calculator Plus don't know if it works on W8

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downl....aspx?id=21622

I'm using W7 because the machine has a bigger screen. I was doing a unit
conversion and noticed strange Length units, like fathom, pica, hand, link,
chain, rods and span. First thing I thought was Windows calculator was
broken. Then thought in downloading new calculator and found calculator plus
from Microsoft. This utility works on W7. I don't know if it works on W8. I
has some currency conversion. The tool looks very similar to XP calculator
if you choose classic mode view.

If you are in a non-metric country, those aren't strange units. Nor is
furlong :-)

You're right :-)

Google and Wikipedia to the rescue:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arroba

Thanks. Now I can amaze my friends!

The origin given was also interesting to me.

Very few :-)

I'm lucky to have the strength to carry a 1 when I add a column of
figures...

Even in a non-metric country, those are strange units, as is
"furlong." (but you know that g) I know how long a fathom and a
furlong are, and I think I once knew how long a hand and a rod are,
but I've forgotten. Most Americans probably know none of these.

I don't know about most Americans, but since a lot of people know about
horses, the hand is familiar to them. Is it also used for dogs? I
forgot.

As for rod, I beleive it was taught in my public school days; it's 5.5
yards, IIRC, but I forget how it is meant to connect to chains or
furlongs or whatever.

Lars, in spite of his Scandinavian name, posted 'arroba', a Spanish and
Portuguese unit name that, like rubaiyat, comes from the Arabic word for
four. The 'al' is obscured by the fact that the 'l' assimilates to the
following 'r' (as well as to certain other consonants)

As he rightly surmised, I had never heard of it.

I believe rod is the same length as pole or perch, namely 5-1/2 yards and
is used by surveyors.
