My daughter's term paper has gotten saved as our global
template and comes up every time that we start Word. How
do we 1) get rid of it and 2) return to a blank screen
when we load Word?

Use Windows Explorer to find every instance of
NORMAL.DOT and rename it to (say)
OLDNORMAL.DOT.
The next time you run Word, it will create a fresh
copy.
If anything important was stored in it (styles, auto-text,
etc), you can copy it from OLDNORMAL.DOT using
the Organiser.
When you are through, delete OLDNORMAL.DOT.
