Uable to install Fax Services
I'm trying to install Fax Services on my home computer. I have installed Fax
Services on many computers at work but my home computer just doesn't want to install it. I go to Add or Remove Programs, Add/Remove Windows Components, Select Fax Serivces, Next, It goes through the installation, But when you go to Printers and Faxes, Click on Fax it says.... Operation could not be completes. Either the printer name was typed incorrectly, or the specified printer has lost connection to the server. Any Ideas.... |

Uable to install Fax Services
I did read the list. I thought the computer had found all the files because
the last time I went through the installation it didn't ask for any files. I did download the hot fi and install it. Then I ran the installation again. I'll check my system for the compressed files. But First how do I get the installation to look for the uncompressed files if it currectly does ask for them? Thanks for your help... Uable to install Fax Services
I don't think that's the issue. From your description, the issue would be
the second one listed, not the first. Here's an expanded answer to the second issue: Many users who have updated an older version of Windows XP to SP2 before they try to install the fax service appear to be encountering a problem installing the fax service. In these cases there is no error message during the installation (distinguishing this from the very common problem where the installation routine states it cannot find the necessary files). The installation appears to proceed without error, but when it is over there is no fax printer apparent and any attempt to send a fax results in the error message “Fax server information cannot be retrieved. The Fax Wizard will now close.” This problem appears to occur because the security data base is corrupted as documented he http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders/FAQFAX.htm#_Toc88835132 2. Why can't the XP Fax Installation Program find the Installation Files? In this case, it found everything, but didn't install it correctly. Its likely you have security data base corruption as documented he http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884018/EN-US/ You cannot add a Windows component in Windows XP You can either: 1. Get the hotfix mentioned in the KB article and install it. Microsoft does not charge for support calls to get supported hotfixes listed in Knowledge Base articles. 2. Try this procedure using the Esentutl.exe utility mentioned in the KB article to recover from security database corruption: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/g...name=c00270202 HP and Compaq Notebook PCs: Unable to Install Windows XP Fax Software I can report that the Esentutl utility has corrected the problem in a number of cases, HOWEVER, note that Microsoft does NOT recommend that you use the utility and would prefer you try the hotfix. -- Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook] "JeffH13" wrote in message news I did read the list. Uable to install Fax Services
Russ,
I got it to work. Normally when I read a post on a newsgroup I don't see a step by step process of work not to do to fix a problem. Yes you are correct I didn't read the whole thing I started to go through the step by step process that was written. The Esentutl.exe utility worked. Thanks....
