I am running XP Home with SP3 and I have set the "Turn Monitor Off After" property to 10 minutes via the Power Options Properties dyalog box. Sometimes this works and the monitor is turned off after the 10 minutes set and other times it remains on continuously. Are there any programs, if running, that will prevent the monitor from swiching off or is this functionality a bit flakey.

Are there any known fixes to this problem.

Graham.

No programs that I'm aware of but
as you know any mouse movement will
prevent the monitor from turning off.

So occasionally I have noticed my mouse
start to walk across the screen on its own,
not certain what causes it but suspect dirt/dust
on the optics. For a wireless mouse maybe a
weak battery.

Hi Graham, my name is Kaja and I would like to assist you in this issue. As
far as your issue I do not think it is program related meaning I dont think
any programs or applications are interfering. Here is what I would try. Go
to control panel, Power options and set things this way:

Turn Off Monitor:
select "never"

System Standby select "never"

This way you control manually when the monitor goes on and off because it
never shuts down.
one more setting to check is hibernation settings. Go into the power
options again and click the "Hibernation tab" There you can enable or
disable hibernation for example you can set the computer or enable it to
hibernate like a bear heehee or never hibernate. I hope this was helpful.
Please let me know so I can improve my services

JS, thanks for the suggestion. This one is an old fashioned "mechanical ball" mouse on this machine. I do not have the same problem on my other machine which has an optical mouse. This could be a vibration issue if it is the mouse. I will try sitting it somewhere off the desk where I can be sure it is not subject to any vibration and cannot move and see if the power management system works as it should.

Kaja, does that not defeat the object. I want the power management system to shut off the monitor automatically when it is not in use. Relying on manual control with a couple of teenage kids is a non starter!!
