Contact come online Alert

I get alerts that a contact has come online from contacts that are not in my
contact list. These people are on a contacts(a friend) contact list. Is this
a new feature or is this a bug in Windows Live Messenger? I have Windows
Live Messenger 2009 (Build 14.0.8089.726), running Windows 7 Ultimate.
