Default Theme problems

Everytime I change theme, it reverts to Windows Classic theme. I set the theme and operating system freezes. Any ideas?

There is a GPEDIT to prevent theme changes.

There is a service that runs to make themes work.

There is uxtheme.dll to check for "signed" themes and
only accept signed themes. The uxtheme.dll file can be
hacked to remove this check.

For some reason, they recommend sfc /scannow, which of
course is going to "repair" uxtheme.dll and remove the hack :-)

The information is saved in the user profile. Create
a second account, log in as the second user, retest.
If it works, then something in the registry of the original
user profile is the problem. If it still doesn't work,
then you have a problem with the "Theme" service not
running, or with GPEDIT blocking theme changes for the
whole machine, and so on.

Generally, a machine "freezing" is not an expected outcome.

That suggests that somehow the Theme service, or a "dependency"
of the Theme service, is doing it. Maybe the machine has
more general problems than just your attempt at a theme change.
Bad RAM, corrupted files, whatever.

My own machine has problems, but I never seem to be able to
get to the root cause. And yes, the machine has been scanned
for malware, many times.
