Default Personal Security virus - is there any cure?

A friend of mine has gotten infected with the "Personal Security"
virus, that is, no matter what icons or programs you try to start it
will not allow you to run any programs.

I got this thing about a month ago, and was able to restore my
computer with my weekly backup, but my friend running XP cannot
get the restore to work. I think he had a few people look at it
but don't think any are gurus or such.

Is there anything he can do to try to salvage his computer?

Thanks,

Jim

Have you tried googling for the solution? You probably need a real guru.

Several of the anti-virus vendors have bootable recovery CDs that you
can point at the afflicted PC. Can't say for sure if they'll fix this
problem, but it's probably worth a try.

Avira's bootable image is available he

http://dlpro.antivir.com/package/res...-common-en.iso

I'm sure there are others.

Download it, burn to a CD, then set the afflicted PCs BIOS to boot from
the CD and cross your fingers.

Thank you, it worked.

By his going into the task manager and disabling the Personal Security
..exe file, he was able to go to RESTORE and restore the machine to
a few weeks prior.

Thanks for the help,

Jim

System Restore is not the way to remove an infection, even though it may
appear to be working. Also, by restoring "to a few weeks prior" the
computer may now have an unstable combination of old and new system files.

Jim,

Glad to hear that you could gain control of the system BUT, the Personal
Security uninstall guide does *NOT* suggest using System Restore in
place of cleaning the compromised system. *Strongly suggest* that you
follow the recommended steps to ensure that the malware has been removed.
Also, see if the system is missing any updates now that a restore point
has been used. If Windows or Automatic Update does not function
then that's an indication that the system is *still* infected.

Have a look here, Jim. Good luck. I got it this morning (the bug, I
mean) and format-ed my C: drive/partition.
My usual move when it is taking too much time searching for removals.
Now I found this.
