Hello all !
There are around 30 PCs in the office connected by wired network, plus untold number of notebooks or other portable devices connected via WIFI. The PCs are running XP and Win7. The number 1 problem that I am facing is the udp traffics. They are taking a big chunk out of the available bandwidth. Can anyone tell me is there a way to limit the udp traffic? Thank you ! |

Internet ? -- Dave Multi-AV Scanning Tool -http://www.pctipp.ch/downloads/dl/35905.asp The UDP traffics are eating up a big chunk of the incoming Internet bandwidth. I am from a 3rd world country where Net feed is very expensive, and very limited. Our company subscribes to 2 net feeds, both 4Mbps. The UDP are cutting the 8Mbps (2 X 4Mbps) net feed to less than 1Mbps. As for what UDP traffic? I can only guess because I do not know how to trace the UDP traffics: There are workers who frequent Youtube And then there are who downloading / streaming movies from places like PPStream. I have tried blocking the PPStream IP but they are by-passing the block by using VPN. As for firewall, it's on the PCs. We do not have a central firewall. |

This is an employee Authorized Use Policy (AUP) implementation. One corporate AUP must be drafted and have all personnel sign it. Anyone caught violating the AUP can be fired. I also think the OP should get a FireWall appliance and filter out unwanted traffic (traffic shaping ?) and content filtering blocking site access. -- Dave Multi-AV Scanning Tool - http://www.pctipp.ch/downloads/dl/35905.asp |

I'd suggest if getting a firewall appliance that it comes with a feature to limit all traffic once a certain amount of it is used in a billing period. Yousuf Khan |

Several ways to eliminate unwanted traffic on your network:
If users are not on limited accounts already, put them there immediately. 1) Whilst logged in as admin, configure IPSec policies for each PC that allow the user to communicate only within the network and/or specified external mail servers, etc, if needed. Type "secpol.msc" (without quotes) in the Run field to get started. There is a wealth of information on how to configure IPSec effectively on the internet. Ironically, a lot of those tutorials are on YouTube. :P 2) Also, you can take advantage of the seldom-used TCP/IP filtering component of the PC's network adapter settings. TCP/IP filtering rules are very effective at eliminating unwanted traffic because they work at the kernel level. Use sparingly unless you are familiar with this security feature. It's quite easy to hobble your network with generic filtering rules. 3) Last, but not least, terminate anyone who repeatedly violates your company's usage policies.
