Default Skype Problems

Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 x64
Skype 8.34.0.78
Logitech HD Webcam C510 model #V-U0016
Cyber Acoustics CVL-1124R microphone

I have two problems.

First of all, how do I prevent automatic updates to Skype? Skype
updated again this afternoon without my permission. I really want to
update any software -- even Windows -- only when I am not doing anything
else on my PC.

Second, I tried a video Skype session this afternoon with my daughter.
She could see me, and I could see her. I could hear her, but she could
not hear me. I verified that the microphone in the webcam and the
separate Cyber Acoustics microphone were both enabled, but she could not
hear me. I was able to record sound locally on my PC from both
microphones, so I suspect there is a problem with my Skyp setup.

Once again, there has been a mass shooting. This time,
it was in Thousand Oaks, California. And once again, just
as he did after the recent mass shooting in Pittsburgh,
President Trump sent his thoughts and prayers to the
families of the victims. Thoughts and prayers will not
stop the carnage. Action is needed on gun control, and
more guns -- as Trump proposed for Pittsburgh and Parkland
in Florida -- is not the answer.

The option to not have it automatically update was removed in version 8
of Skype. It may be possible to prevent it from updating in the
background by closing Skype completely (i. e. you won't receive any
incoming Skype calls), but - if there are any updates pending - they'll
install next time you use it (or next time you restart your machine,
unless you succeed in preventing it from starting with Windows).

I suppose you could try a total uninstall and reinstall of Skype - as
long as you can remember your Skype ID and password, you won't lose your
contacts and most other things, as those are stored with your ID on the
Skype network, not locally. But I've no great confidence that'll fix
your problem.

Enough people think it _is_ the answer - or, are afraid of losing their
guns, even if they can see it's not the answer - that you won't get
anywhere. (I don't know what the answer is; UK has much more limited gun
ownership and far fewer shootings, but Switzerland has almost universal
gun ownership, and also very few shootings.)

Did you (and she) try the built-in 'Echo / Sound Test Service'? That
should reveal which side has which problem.

Same for Settings - Audio & Video. That should reveal if the Camera,
Microphone and Speakers work on each end.

I cannot find 'Echo / Sound Test Service'.
