and then there's that pesky page format limitation again, with valuable
space taken up by margins. Excel doesn't have any of that nonsense, at
least not until you want to print, which I almost never do.

Much of what I've been involved with _is_ print-minded - either for
_actual_ printing, or at least .pdf production for wider distribution.
(Yes, I know PDF can use big sheets - I use that in genealogy; however,
most Word documents _are_ based around pages [though the A4/10by8
dichotomy causes more problems than expected!].)

Your case is a special one, where although you're not using Excel's
_calculation_ abilities, you _are_ using its _manipulation_ ones.

Correct, or more specifically, VBA's string manipulation capabilities.

Yes; I think as Ken Blake said, "Your needs are different from mine or
from most people's." In fact I suspect yours are nearly unique! [I
rather suspect others, confronted with the same problem you had, would
maybe have done something bespoke (maybe in VBA, maybe something else)
rather than trying to do it inside Excel _or_ Word. The fact that you've
managed to do it inside one of them.]

My Excel-based Sudoku puzzle solver is pretty cool to watch as it works its
way through a puzzle to the end. There again, I take advantage of being
able to reference columns, rows, and cells directly. In Word, I'd have to
juggle an "array of arrays", 27 in all, to achieve the same thing. It can
be done, but Excel just makes it easier.

Do you know Chris Dearlove? I have (somewhere!) his sudoku solver (also
in Excel, IIRR). It has stages - you can just use it to fill in the
obvious cells, up to complete solution. I imagine the sudoku-solving
world isn't huge!

Some day you're going to _not_ prove to be two things in _every_ post:

Hi Rene,

Â*Â* Please do everyone a favor and NEVER respond to anything Arlen
posts. Most have him kill filed, but when you respond, they have to
read his drivel to get to what you have said.Â* :-)

Yep He's done for good..

Like most trolls, he changes his nym every now and then to escape from
kill files. So it may not be for good and you will have to do it again.

But no big deal--it takes just a few seconds to create a new kill file
entry when you need it.

Yes, I've got him under 3 nyms in the bozo bin.

Just curious--what are Excel's text handling capabilities that you
couldn't do in Word?

I'll answer in two parts: what I need to do, and then how I do it.

Interesting, thanks. Your needs are different from mine or from most
people's. But couldn't you do something similar with two Windows, for
example, one with Notepad and one with Notepad++?

I use VBA to do the heavy lifting. That's really the key to the speed and
accuracy. So another solution would have to have a similar component and I
don't think I have a tool in my 'personal skills' toolbox that would allow
me to interact programmatically with either of those apps.

And this one is an HTA:

As the saying goes, when all you have is a hammer,
everything looks like a nail. Of course, auto-solving
of sudokus is also absurd, anyway. I only did it as a practical
joke because the woman I live with loves them. She
can't resist the more than dubious claim that crosswrods
and sudokus improve mental functioning in old age.

No, I don't know Chris. I'm actually not a huge Sudoku fan but my niece got
me involved. When she moves on, I will, too. Watching a puzzle being solved
is kind of an extension to what I was doing in the early 1980's when I
lived in Las Vegas, where casinos are obviously a big deal. Some of my
first programs, written in BASIC and assembly back then, were bingo, keno,
and roulette games.

Back to Excel - it's actually very versatile. In addition to spreadsheets
and what I do with it, you can use it as a picture viewer, an mp3 player, a
task launcher for anything Windows-related, a tool to automate retrieval of
web content, and so much more.

Interesting; I thought I'd used it in XP too, but I might be mistaken.

F2 to rename a file?
It's what I use in XP.

F3 for a search (or CTRL-F)

F5 to refresh list of files in an open folder (XP places the
new files at the bottom of the folder view, no matter the date)

And that's about it. I disabled F1 = help a long time ago.

Either Mayayana's pulling our legs or he did some serious

I am actually running Office 2007 on my Windows 7 laptop, while I am
running Office 2016 on my Windows 10 desktop. There is remarkably little
difference in functionality between the two of them, it's more like
they've just rearranged the furniture (the "office furniture" ;-) ). The
only new feature I can tell is that the macro scripting language has
been updated with newer functions, and that's all. All previous file
formats have been left completely untouched and it's easy to exchange
files between the two versions without any conversions needed, even when
going back to the earlier versions of Office.

UPDATE:

Given the worthless pieces of **** had a field day with this thread, we can
assume there is no further value to be gleaned so here's a possibble
summary from an _adult_ point of view...

It's highly instructive that, combined, after almost three hundred
contributions from over thirty authors, nobody can't come up with even a
dozen important functionalities that we can do on Windows 10 that we can't
already do on all other Windows operating systems from Windows XP onward.
o *What can you do on Windows 10 that you can't do on Windows XP or Windows 7?*
https://groups.google.com/d/msg/microsoft.public.windowsxp.general/fJBY472ds3E/W539WlUTAwAJ

Likewise, it's just as informative that we seem to arrive at a similar
conclusion for the various Microsoft Office versions extent:
o *What useful functionality is in the newer Microsoft Office*
*that isn't already in the older MSOffice 2007?*
https://groups.google.com/d/msg/microsoft.public.windowsxp.general/sKGer09EakA/F4duRogaBQAJ]

The adult technical takeaway, could be, unless there's actually something
of truly useful value, that the updates are not as meaningful as Microsoft
marketing would have us attempt to believe.
