Default sending a text from a computer.

How hard is it to send a text from a PC, if you don't know, didn't ask,
the cellular carrier for the cell phone?

A couple days ago I bought some elastic online, and they offer to find
it in the store and bring it out to the car.

They say when the order is ready they will text me the store's phone
number.

The webpage first said order was in process and then pending pickup. 90
minutes later I went there and they brought it out, as they said they
would.

But the text never came.

I would have expected it the text to be sent automatically when the
order status is changed to pending pickup. But that assumes a PC can
send a text** and I thought they would have to know the cellular carrier
prefix to do that. That seems like a big hole that should be plugged.

**Well, it can using MyPhoneExplorer, but that doesn't seem widely used.
What alternative might be built into a PC program?

Just some 'text' ramblings. You can text to a Google Voice number and
have it sent to you as an email by setting up the proper options in
Google Voice. Also, in W10 there is the Your Phone app. It links up to
your phone, which has to have texting. It then appears on your PC. I'm
not sure why, but in my case, my phone has to be at home for the PC app
to work properly. There may be an option to change this, but it works
ok for my needs.

I use pushbullet. I'm on Linux and don't have the ability to use the phone app on Windows 10. I don't even know how it works.

Pushbullet uses an add-on for Firefox and an app on your android/ios phone.
https://www.pushbullet.com/

Once signed-in in both places and as long as your browser is open you will receive your text messages in Firefox. And you can reply.

You don't really have to use the add-on for Firefox, I think you can just do it from their website. If I'm right, that opens up using
Chrome and other browsers.

You can also start a conversation just by entering the phone # you want to send to and then the body. I don't type well on android and
just love using the computer to talk to my chatty 500 words a minute daughter. LOL

No, it only works for 'proper' text messages.

I don't like typing on either, but on the computer I type one letter at a
time, while on the Android phone I type (Swype) a whole word at a time. In
the end, it's pretty close to the same speed either way.

I seem to be making even more mistakes than I used to. I had minimum
hand surgery (for one trigger finger) 3 weeks ago and it was worse with
a bandage but it's been getting bad for months. It's better when I
concentrate.

Thanks everyone.

Hi Micky,

You just eMail to them. You take their (smart) phone
number and tack their domain on to it.

For example: (no dashes)

They can reply right back to you.

When I am in doubt of their domain, I sent it to a
number of them. The one that does not bounce is
the right one. Typically it is only att or verizon.

HTH,
-T

Here are some domains:

Verizon: @vtext.com

AT&T: @txt.att.net

Alltel: @message.alltel.com

CellularOne: @mobile.celloneusa.com

Cingular: @cingularme.com

Nextel: @messaging.nextel.com

Omnipoint: @omnipointpcs.com

Qwest: @qwestmp.com

Sprint: @messaging.sprintpcs.com

T-Mobile: @tmomail.net

Virgin Mobile: @vmobl.com

Thanks
