Default Other devices error code 28

I have a new Gateway computer and I have an error in device manager that I
can not get rid of. It is in Unknown Device--Other Devices and it has a
yellow question mark there--error code 28. I have uninstalled the device
many times but it keeps trying to install with hardware wizard many
times--however, I do not even know what the device is because it does not
tell me the device name. Gateway tech support can not seem to help me
either. Everything seems to work fine on the computer, at this time, but I
would like to know how to find out what the device is that is gving the
error and how to fix it. Is it a USB device? An internal flaw? Or do I
just ignore it? Is there a way to detect and fix this error? Please
Help!!
Thanks
Joe

See if they offer a chipset driver. It could also be attached to one of
your other devices.

But If it ain't broke.....

I would also check in your BIOS settings and see if any intergrated devices
such as a smart card reader or other internal device is enabled but not
installed . I know on many systems i have seen things such as compact flash
readers that were onboard hardware were enabled and not installed and it
shows up as unknown hardware and gives a erro code 28. just something to look
in to .

I did a little more research on the device and in details in hardware
manager it says it could be ACPI\AWY0001 what is that? And what can I do to
fix the unknow device?

Joe,

Try this, go to device manager and try to update the driver for this device,
you may need to do it manually.. In the hardware update wiz, select "No not
at this time", next, select "install from a list or specific location", next,
select "Don't search", next, check the box "show compatible hardware" and
select from the list usually APCI Uniprocessor PC or (APCI Multiprocessor PC
if you dual core cpu's), etc.. Choose or use the have disk option and browse
the setup disk, then select next and ok and reboot.. If you have any
concerns, then I suggest you let Gateway customer support guide you or
confirm the proper selection..

Using the EggHeadCafe, makes it extremely difficult to follow what you
are replying to.

You should probably have started a fresh thread, rather than replying to
a USENET thread from December 2006.

http://groups.google.ca/group/micros...6069b3b06f9e77

The thread you were replying to, was discussing the AMD AwayMode driver,
something apparently used on a Media Center PC.

http://www.tim.id.au/blog/tims-free-...-driver-guide/

"ACPI\AWY0001 device

This device appears to be part of supporting Away Mode in XP Media Centre;
I’ve seen it as an on/off option in BIOS on a few new machines. Away mode
seems to be like a lesser standby, where things can wake up faster."

You should at least identify the computer model number, so
people have some clue what the problem could be.

Default Other devices error code 28

I recently recieved CODE 28.It was about my ALL INONE HP PRINTER.I found it in DEVISE MANAGER with a yellow marker in it.There was also a FAX MACHINE attached to my printer in Computer Devises.I have not got a Fax Machine,so I removed it,only for it to return later. My HP ALL IN ONE printer didnt need a new driver ,as my Computer was telling me.!It was already installed and it was running perfect, without any problems.Code 28 means the printer can be used offline. Also another Item appeared in Device Manager with a yellow icon.It was called a soft top modem.Ehhhh, whats a soft top modem? But it also had CODE 28,which meant it could be used OFF LINE. About 12 o,clock midnight,my computer started acting strange, and I kept losing connection to the internet.I checked Device Manager again and the Fax Machine had returned and the soft top modem, both with yellow icons.I removed said items, but they promptly returned.I then realised I was offline ,but my computer was still in use.So someone or a virus was useing my computer offline.I have never used my computer Offline So I quickly disconnected my computer, turned off E/c and Tele connection. How was someone getting into my computer,I had NORTON 360 installed, and had all remote connections turned off,so how could they get in.I had recently downloaded an Office program,so to cut a long story short, there was a remote connection turned on,in the office program.Quickly removed remote connection and Office program,I,m sure it was MicroSoft Office.Problem fixed.CODE 28 means your computer can be used OFFLINE. When you turn off your computer at night, dissconnect from e/c and Tele line, but before you do,just watch your yellowlight on your Tower/modem,if its still flashing off and on,its a sure sign its still being used " OFFLINE ".I have not had the same trouble again, make sure there are no remote connections still open,or a BACK DOOR. " CODE 28 means OFFLINE USE.Hope this helps.
