Your choice entirely, of course, but in my experience those who think
Window 10 is "yuck" are those who haven't taken the trouble to learn
it and learn how to organize its settings to their liking. And better
yet, who haven't taken the trouble to install a third-party utility
like Start10.

If you were to look at and use my computer, which runs Windows 10 and
Start10, you would likely have a hard time realizing that it wasn't
Windows 7.

I've ditched it because it was noticeably slower than 8.1 despite the
claims that it loads more quickly.

OK, but that's not at all my experience.

Mine is switched off. I have no complaints.

I'm not actively engaged in warfare with the
Windows 10 install. It's an attempt to turn
a desktop into a SmartPhone, and as long
as you're comfortable with the privacy compromises
in your SmartPhone, this is no different.

On several occasions, the Win10 maintenance activities
have prevented me from using the machine as I wanted,
costing me lost time. So that does mean, for
demanding work, the Win10 boot drive just sits
on the shelf. While I can put extra effort into
"feeding and burping" Windows 10 before using it,
I don't intend on doing that as regular procedure.
I will reach for something that "just works" instead.

Tried W10 on a laptop and immediately noticed how much slower it was.
Just rolled back to 8.1 and am now slowly sorting out the resultant
glitches which weren't there before.

Instead of rolling back, it'd probably be faster and easier to just
restore
the system image that you created before you rolled forward.

Isn't that what the roll-back does? (I did have an image just in case)

When Windows 10 installs, C:\Windows becomes C:\Windows.old.
And the installer makes a new C:\Windows.

But the part of the rollback which doesn't work right, is
what they do to your "C:\Program Files". Anything outside the
Windows folder, may not get good treatment.

And that's why a proper backup is superior to
the rollback. At least for Windows 10.

For example, when Windows 10 updates, there is a good
chance your AV program will get removed.

GWX doesn't work for me. The very first time I installed it, it worked -
but after that all I get is the process in Task Manager and nothing else. I
finally uninstalled it.

GWX is not the same thing as GWX Control Panel. There is no install
for GWX Control Panel.

I meant to say GWX Control Panel.

It was XP that got me to start using Linux. 8.1 and 10 appear to be much
worse than that.

(I sort of agree with you re XP - but the better hardware support was
worth it for me.) If you've been using Linux since XP days, though, why
are you in the W7 newsgroup ...

It was all the viruses and trojans that got me to start using Linux, a
decade ago.

Obviously, so I can keep abreast of issues so I can help my clueless
friends. ;-)

I have personally never been infected with any virus or trojan either, but
I've cleaned the PCs of dozens of friends and acquaintances over the years
- all using some version of Windows. Those who I have converted to Linux
never come back. Those who continue to use Windows frequently call back
with words like "Oooh, it happened again! Please help."

Several reasons, including:

1. Some things work better in Windows, and I'll use what is appropriate
(still no NEED for Win 8+ for this, but see below). Particularly, I'm
used to certain video editing and DVD burning software (Nero).

2. I have a web page, and need to see how it looks on other browsers,
and IE/Edge are Windows only.

3. At times, I'm expected to help people with their computers. Some will
know nothing except what's on those (PCs) in stores now, and that's
Windows. Now that's the later (8+) versions that turn your computer into
what looks like an iPhone.

That's one reason. I seldom had any problem with viruses, even though I
don't use any antivirus software. I just pay attention to what I'm doing
(including not clicking on unexpected download links). Also, avoiding
Internet Explorer.

Another reason is that I've been using computers since well before GUIs,
and am used to a command line.

So why not just avoid all the privacy-raping rubbish and stick with
Windows 7?

You do realise, that by using Windows 10, you agree to place Microsnot
in total control of your computer? They can do what they like to it at
any time of their choosing. They can view your search queries and
results, your contacts, your Skype contacts, your Hotmail contacts, what
videos you watch, what websites you visit, what music you listen to,
they can scan all your documents. And that's just the start of it.

Are you happy with that?

If the answer to that question is yes, you're an idiot and deserve
everything you get.

Not even close. Microsoft does some things I approve of, and others
that I strongly disapprove of. I like some Microsoft products better
than the competition, but in other categories, I prefer the
competition.

Just a couple of examples:

1. Of all the browsers out there, I think Microsoft's are among the
worst.

2. I think WordPerfect is a much better word processor than Microsoft
Word.

3. Microsoft nomenclature is terrible. Microsoft has confused
countless people by needlessly changing names of things, and by giving
similar names to dissimilar products.

Thinking about it, I think I've only once encountered a Windows machine
(I think that would have been in '9x days) that was infected; I think
that one was riddled, but I didn't have time to really investigate it.

I realise this (my lack of contact with infected machines among friends
and acquaintances) may be unusual.

think a lot of Linux enthusiasts these days decry the "Linux is command
