Gounding VCR

I connected my VCR to the back of my video card. I have the ATI Rage Fury Pro with 32MB and a Creative Labs Sound Blaster 5.1 sound card. I get a high humming sound when I connect the audio out from the VCR to an input jack on the back of my sub-woofer. My computer speakers are Yamaha YST. Is there a way to get rid of the humming?

You need a TV out video card such as the AIW.

Hum or noise in amplifiers is very hard to trace and also remove. Some may
be as a result of noise recorded on the media, which is ofeten the case for
tape media or can be introduced by lack of proper earthing in the
amplification circuits, this could be the VCR preamplifier or the sub-w
amplifier: or induced noise if they share the same power socket.

Is the sub-woofer designed to accept the 'input' levels from the VCR or is
it expecting one with different 'gain'? Best way is to check specification
on the output of the VCR and also the specifications on the Subwoofer.

Is this humming the only sound you get or is it a background noise?

The hum may be from the VCR amplification circuitry itself . Try switching
the power cord for the sub-w to another socket and not one on the same
circuit as any flourescent light fittings.

Also, why is it that you choose to connect the sub-w direct to the VCR when
you have the CL 5:1? It should have a sub-w out RCA socket that you connect
to the sub-w.

Sorry that there is not a specific answer: too many variables.

Connect it as follows and it will repair your situation:

- Connect the Yamaha speaker set to the SB 5.1 card as per the Creative
Guide included with your card or go to www.creative.com to download the
diagram.

- Purchase a y-adapter cable that converts Left and Right RCA to 1/8" stereo
mini-plug. Available at Radio Shack, Best Buy, etc. Connect the L - R RCA
plugs to the L - R Audio Output of the VCR and plug in the other end of the
cable to the Blue jack on the SB 5.1 card (LINE IN).

This is an expensive example, most are about $5.00.

I assume that the ATI Rage Fury Pro has a analogue video input for the video
signal from the VCR Video Output
