Default Hosts - Blocking Ads

Is it possible, as it was with Win98 to block certain domains by adding a
file to the windows directory called 'Hosts' (no extension)? I have not been
able to test this.

A much better idea is to use Internet Connection Firewall to block ranges of
IP addresses. An even better idea is to do this with third-party firewall
software, which is more powerful than the basic firewall native to XP. The
Hosts file was always a poor way to block URLs.
