Default HP Photosmart 6520 Windows 10 complains about Windos 8.1 needed

HP Photosmart 6520 (a question for a lady friend of mine).

A cute divorced neighbor asked me why her Windows 10 update screwed with
her long-ago-installed HP Photosmart 6520 printer drivers.

When using her original disc from HP, she told me it asked for Windows 8.1.

What's the easiest solution?
I'll google the HP web site and the Windows 10 printer driver pages (if I
can find a list of supported printer drivers on the net), but I wonder if
you have generic advice off hand.

Don't do research ... I'll do that.

But just what initial direction would you go first?
HP or Windows 10 updates?

OK. I'll recommend to her she go to HP first.
She wants to do it on her own, so I'll have to talk her through it in
email, so I'm documenting what I'll tell her below......(for folks to
advise me if they have better ideas, offhand).

Again, don't do my research ... just advise and correct from your
experience since I don't deal with printer drivers except once every few
years (if that).

One problem I just though of though, is that HP tends to create a "driver
package" which installs all sort of crapware (HP branded software), where I
didn't think to ask her if she just wants to print or if she wants the huge
HP crapware that HP foists upon us every chance they can get.

Assuming she's seeking drivers only... Googling, I find this instantly:
https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers.../model/5169040

I don't know if she's 32-bit or 64-bit but I'll assume 64bit.
Typeriver-Product Installation Software
Version: 28.8
Operating systems: Windows 10 (64-bit)
Release date: Oct 30, 2015
File name: PS6520_1315-1.exe (69.2 MB)
https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers...Id/mp-108722-3

I downloaded that 64-bit beast, where the hash is:
---------------------------
Checksum information
---------------------------
Name: PS6520_1315-1.exe
Size: 72558696 bytes (69 MB)

SHA256: 0C446F136DAFFC75E124ADCFBF46BB46B885B8EBF11506C359 C1BFD52DAE50F7

---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

I also got the 32-bit version
Type: Driver-Product Installation Software
Version: 28.8
Operating systems: Windows 10 (32-bit)
Release date: Oct 30, 2015
File name: PS6520_1315-1.exe (69.2 MB)
https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers...Id/mp-108722-3

---------------------------
Checksum information
---------------------------
Name: PS6520_1315-1(1).exe
Size: 72558696 bytes (69 MB)

---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

Unless I did something wrong, it's the same file for 32-bit as for 64-bit.

Search the computer for the old driver. Device Manager, Update driver,
"Browse my computer for driver software", "Let me pick from a list of
available drivers".

Both. Go to the HP site for the latest drivers.

That simple procedure almost never works nowadays for older printers.

I don't have the same printer as she, but my older printer isn't in the
Windows 10 "normal" drivers.

Nor is it available on the HP site anymore.

And, it's almost impossible to archive the HP printer driver after the
fact, and anyone who says DoubleDriver or DrvBack hasn't actually tried it
on a PRINTER driver.

I assume that's the case for her, otherwise she wouldn't have asked the
question if it was as simple as you intimate (often it is not, but for
older printers mainly).

What I wrote to her was the following steps which I checked as far as I
could, but I don't have her printer on my network so I couldn't check all
the forms in sequence...

Make sure your printer is on the network and that it is turned on.
In Windows 10, hit Start (flag) (gear symbol) Windows Settings
Devices Printers & scanners Add a printer or scanner
It will search but if it doesn't find your printer driver, then you can
click on "The printer that I want isn't listed".
An "Add Printer" form should come up.
Select (o) My printer is a little older. Help me find it.
Then hit "Next".
It will say "Searching for available printers..." but since I don't have
that printer, it won't find it (of course).
For you, it should find the printer so you can select it and hit "Next".

You have to notice that at some point, while you're clicking, there will be
a special printer-only "Windows Update" button.
That's a critical button which you need to hit if Windows 10 doesn't
normally install the printer driver.
Once you hit that button, it doesn't actually update "Windows" (so don't
worry); it just finds the printer driver for you.

It can take forever though, like a half hour or even an hour, so you have
to just let it chunk away.
Once it comes up with the "special" drivers (for older printers), you can
select the one you need from the list it gives you.

Thanks.

I wrote up above in other posts what she needs to do.

1. First, download the HP driver,
2. If that fails, try the "Windows Special Update" button.

The problem with the first method is that the download from HP seems to be
hugely filled with crapware (I ran it and was appalled). So, while it's
easy, it's filled with crap.

The problem with the second method is that you have to click a hundred
buttons (well, a lot), one of which is "Windows Update" which is just badly
named since the LAST thing she wants to do is update Windows since that is
what killed her driver in the first place.

That Windows Update button should be called "Search for old Printer Drivers
on the Microsoft printer driver archives" or something like that.

While either method is easy for you or for me, it's not easy for a non
technical mother so I was just hoping there would be an easier way to
explain it to her.

I have an old HP 4180 printer. After upgrade to 1803 I
tried to print something and a message come on screen to
insert the disk that came with the printer. The disk was
for Windows XP 32 bit but I inserted it anyway and it
worked. The pprinter now works.

You might wanna use ImgBurn to convert that disk (a CD?) into an ISO
image file for future use. Win 10 can mount ISO files directly.

Both are good ideas, where it's nice to know that she isn't the only one
whose printer drivers vanished (somehow) when Windows 10 updated.

I hesitate to explain to her how to block Windows 10 updates, because it
would just be too complicated. An ISO is probably too complicated.

It's a funny thing, but what is so simple to us, is complicated for some
people ... but it is what it is, where our challenge is simplifying it for
them.

In this case, I haven't heard back from her, but I explained where to get
the HP executable and suggested she execute it but turn EVERYTHING it asks
for off except the printer driver itself.

If that fails, I explained to her how to do the Windows 10 special update
button (which is really badly named as it's not a Windows 10 update at all
but a search for archived printer drivers).

I will let you know what happens when I learn more.
Thanks.

The PC that she's using, is it also an HP computer? If so then it should
have a program called HP Support Assistant on it. This program will
allow her to add the printer to it and it will then check with HP's
servers for the latest device drivers for both the PC and the printer
and notifies you if any updates are available.
