Default CD Drives mislabeling

hey walt,

i myself am having the same problem. on the matter of
recording software i would use nero instead of roxio nero
is much more stable and less less abusive on the resources
as well as not being "intrusive"
but the matter of the drives not refreshing seems to have
nothing to do with the software and more to do with an
internal problem which is resolved by downloading sp1 but
sp1 causes so many other problems that it isn't worth the
headache my advice would be to live with as it dosen't
cause any real harm but an annoyance and i will post any
new data i auire on this board

Subject: CD Drives don't "refresh"

I'm running Win XP Pro and have two brands of CD drives
(HP CD-Writer 7500 and LTR-16102B). Say I have a CD with
the label "Backup" in either drive (it doesn't matter if
it's CDR or CDRW) and it shows that drive (in Win
Explorer) with a CD labeled "Backup", I then replace the
CD with one labeled "Pictures". It continues to show up
as "Backup", although I can access the pictures on the

CD.
The only way I can get the proper label to show is to
restart the computer. I have problems in burning CDs
because of this problem with the drives not "refreshing".

I've tried removing and reinstalling Roxio EZCD software
and now have ver. 6.0 with "Drag-to-Disc". I don't like
any of the Roxio software because it is so "intrusive",
but it seems to be necessary for Win XP CD drives? None

of
the software changes made any difference in regard to
my "refresh" problem. Any suggestions?

I have now also removed (in Hardware settings) and let

Win
XP reinstall both CD drives. Same problem. When I check
the drives in Computer Management the labels are correct,
but Win Explorer the labels are not refreshable without
rebooting.

I am operating with SP1. So that doesn't appear to make any difference. Can
you tell me what is involved with switching to Nero. It's a different file
system, so I believe I would have to convert all my CDRW discs to Nero's
system before converting? I like Nero and I've considered doing what you
suggest, but I've hesitated to covert all my CDRW discs over to a new
system. Any advice? Thanks very much for your input.

I am still looking for a solution for my problem ... for anyone else reading
this message.

I have this problem too. Windows XP Pro updated with all fixes and SP
releases MS has for XP. I use Iomega's HotBurn Pro which I like very
much by the way. So it is not the recording software!

I have 3 drives that can read CD-R disks, 2 internal on the SCSI bus
and one external on the USB bus (that's the best one of the lot!).

The only fix I have found is to put the disks in a different drive
after recording them... however I think I'll try a
disconnect-reconnect on the USB drive before reading the disks to see
if that helps.

My guess is that either the drive or XP is buffering the disk label
and not updating the buffer when a new disks in inserted.

I'm finding that even my virtual drive (Alcohol) is not refreshing. Could be
a software conflict. I've started knocking things out of startup (with
selective starup), but have not been able to eliminate the problem yet.
