8 - 8.1 UGH!!
I just upgraded (hah!) my stepson's new Dell laptop from Win 8 to Win
8.1. I had set up a local account for him under 8, but the upgrade seems to have been almost a complete reinstall of the OS! First of all, it required a LIVE account login during the setup run -- I could not find a way to have a local account. I was able subsequently to create a local account as a second account, but when I restart, it goes to the LIVE account login! I have to click the back-arrow symbol to get the screen where all accounts are shown. Is there a way to get to that screen without that intermediate step? Also, Dell popped up a screen about upgrading to Dell Backup and Recovery Premium for $40! It seems that regular DBAR doesn't do much and premium has some incompatibilities! "Customers will not be able to restore from the local Windows 8 factory image." "Customers will not be able to restore from a Windows 8 System Backup." I wonder what else I will find! |

There are ways to get around that hotmail account thing, I can't give you a link but it involves pulling the plug on internet, wired and wireless, and then it fails to connect and gives you the local account option. Kinda hidden!!!! But check on google. On local account, the store does not work, and if you use any metro apps that are MS, they fail. I gotta Dell, but luckily I don't use DBAR, and the image I have is a win7 maybe, since that's what it came with, and I forced the upgrade to 8 then 8.1 |

Thanks. Yes, great side effect. I only have one user account but I've been back and forth, and I've stuck with MS account only since it makes life easier. I'm lazy. I have an android tablet, so there I'm stuck with Google accounts. Can't win! |

Login with that Windows live account and then go to: Control Panel User Accounts Manage Accounts You can then detach the account from Microsoft's account. It might ask you to login with the Administrator password, so do it. You should be able to change it from online account to local account. I have been there and never again create a remote account because you can'y be online all the time but you need to use your computer. Good luck. |

If the disk crashes you have to rebuild the disk, restore the OS, and add all of the updates, including 8.1 As for the accounts things, it is my understanding you have to use the MS account to obtain items from the MS Store (which now includes updates), some Metro apps think they need access to the MS account, but if you turn off the internet when you are using the program it works OK The only Metro programs I use is couple of games so I have limited experience. I also have the computer booting directly to the Desktop and use the MS Icon on the desktop for all of my system accesses/ |
