Default Black Screen Crash?

Help.....My Compaq Desktop running XP was on. I was out of the room for
about an hour and when I went back to it.....there was a BLACK screen with a
message that read something like, "Windows not found, you need to use the XP
CD's to reinstall" and/or "at start up press F 10 or "r" to reboot". I
pressed "r" and it reset to just like it came out of the box. All of my
documents and pictures are GONE. Arggg!

Help, Anyone? Advice?
Thank you!

Try pressing the F8 key on pc start-up,select safe mode, enter xp as
administr-
ator, locate the files,or try "system restore"..The OS simply cannot revert to
its original set-up by a simple restart of pc.It takes alot of time for it
to do
that.....

It wasn't the typical "system restore" the happened after I pushed "r"......a
Compaq screen came up and it took about 20 minutes. After that, I knew I was
in trouble because the PC asked me to set all values, like time zone, user
name, etc. It was like it wiped the hard drive and started from scratch.
Strange thing is, after searching, I've found a couple folders with
files/pictures in them but nothing else.

Anyone? Should I still give the F8 and Safe Mode a try?
