Vista vs. Win7 64-bit compliance?

I came across another post here that recommends ccleaner. Looks capable and
popular. I've used baku on XP.

I visit the developer site and one of the FAQs says ccleaner is compatabile
up to Vista and Vista-64bit.

Is there a discrepancy between Vista 64-bitt and Win7 64-bit? Should I wait
for a Win7 64-bit "OK"?

I'm using version 1.41.544 on Win7, both 32 and 64 bit, without problem.

Then you're either very knowledgeable or very lucky.
There is no need with the current versions of Windows (Vista and 7) to use a
registry cleaner at all. Orphaned entries in the register do not affect
performance...

Forgive my ignorance, I've noticed the Win7-64 has a Program Files AND a
Program Files (x86) folder.

I've let applications blindly follow their 32-bit installers which has
presented their own set of problems afterwards. I'll spare you the
details.

Is there a 64-bit "checker" of zipped installers, before or after?

I have a feeling I have to do a lot of homework on permissions, dammit!

NO!!!

They're distinct and separate folders. 64-bit apps install into the
Programs folder. 32-bit apps install into the 32-bit "x86" folder.

Installers of 32-bit apps have to be aware of this new underlying
mechanism or there will be problems, from my experience.

Never said there was, and never said it did. But CCleaner is a lot more
than just a registry cleaner. Been using it for quite a few years for
things other than cleaning registry. And, yes, I've read all the
diatribes against using registry cleaners.

Forgive my ignorance, I've noticed the Win7-64 has a Program Files AND a
Program Files (x86) folder.

This started with WinXP x64 about 6 years ago. It took me about 6 months to
figure out that the x86 folder was for 32-bit apps. Up to then, I thought
that it must be for 64-bit, since it never appeared in 32-bit WinXP, so I
had been forcing all my new apps into Program Files (no x86). Someone
finally explained that the "x86" referred to the 8086 family of Intel CPUs
(8086, 80286, 80386, etc.), which were all 32-bit. By that time, I had all
my apps thoroughly scrambled in the two folders. ;( Didn't matter
anyhow; there were no 64-bit apps then - and there still are precious few!

Installing into the proper folder guides Windows x64 in finding the proper
versions of drivers, DLLs and other support files to go with each
application. (So I understand; I'm not a developer or techie of any kind.)

Properly written apps should now automatically go into Program Files IF they
are 64-bit; into Program Files (x86) for all those new and old 32-bit apps.

I have been using cleaner for sometime. I did not install it, but run it
from a memory stick.
