Default XP based PC disconnecting LAN from the internet

I have 4 computers on my home LAN. They are all connected to an 8 port switch.
One cable runs from the switch to the modem.

Each PC has a fixed or static IP address. No DHCP servers are enabled. PCs all
run Windows XP Pro or Vista (one laptop, which is a recent addition).

When my wife turns on her PC as it starts up it is forcing the modem to
disconnect from the ISP. The modem eventually reconnects.

It also happens if the PC is idle and she say, goes to it and starts using the
web browser. It could be if the screen saver is active and she moves the mouse
or taps the keyboard.

I thought that maybe it's a hardware problem so I bought a new network card and
installed it. The motherboard has onboard LAN but I disabled that before
installing the new card.

Unfortunately it's still doing it. And I don't know why.

The computer has been doing it for a while, even when it was connected
wirelessly (it had a Netgear wireless adapter in it before I ran cabling for a
hardwired network).

Any clues, tips, hints, informations or a solution would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like you must have a combination modem/router. Some ISPs have a
limit on the number of computers you can use with their modem/router. Or
the modem/router may be faulty. Call your ISP.

I tried two other modems. Same thing happens.

And no, there is no limit on the number of PCs that I can connect. Besides, how
would it know?

Anyway, if that was the problem then the PC would not be able to connect or that
others would not be able to connect if such a limit was in force.

No, the problem is centred soley on this particular computer.

Today I made up a bootable Linux CD. I'll reconfigure the computer to boot off
the CD and I'll see if the problem still occurs when it starts up and loads
Linux.

At least then if the problem doesn't occur then it's definately a Windows issue
and not a hardware one.

PSU interference. Try putting a large ferrite ring or two on the LAN cable.
